iPhone 4 Text Message Problems

Question:iPhone 4 Text Message Problems

I just got the iPhone 4 for Verizon last week and so far I love it, I have had a couple issues with texting though. About half of the texts that I send to one particular friend come through to him as just boxes, and about half the texts I send to another friend come through to her with every other character being upside down question marks...So far, it only happens with those two people and it only happens with about half of the texts i send, and there seems to be no consistency for a reason (no particular length, special characters, etc.; they are not even both using the same service). Sent and received messages look fine on my end.Any idea of how to prevent this or fix it?

That is going to be a network problem, if the text does not look like that on your phone. Are they both on Verizon? If yes have them make sure the provisioning on their phones is up to date.

Answer:iPhone 4 Text Message Problems

The one getting boxes is Verizon and the one getting upside down question marks is AT&T. Both say that they do not get texts like that from anyone else...

Answer:iPhone 4 Text Message Problems

Do you have others with AT&T who are receiving your texts with no problem? Can you check with them and compare the text to your original and see what characters are being changed?

Answer:iPhone 4 Text Message Problems

Ive had the same text messaging issues and while it hasnt been a show stopper, it IS a major nuisance. Sometimes my recipients get the upside down question mark texts and sometimes they get spaced out texts. With upside down question marks texts every other character is an upside down question mark. It looks kind of Arabic. With spaced out texts they get texts with spacing between each character and the texts are broken into three or four different messages to my recipients. This has really become a major annoyance so this morning I called Verizon and found out that they have a garbled text ticket going with Apple that is unresolved yet. So I guess we have to live with it for now.Also...another thing Ive noticed with the iPod Phone (thats what I call it because its basically an iPod that talks/texts)...when you turn your character count on sometimes you have 160 to work with and sometimes only 70. Doesnt seem to be any rhyme or reason why. Sigh...why couldnt my Blackberry have the iPod Phone interface...or why cant my iPod Phone have the functionality of my Blackberry. Cest la vie...

Answer:iPhone 4 Text Message Problems

Hope it is resolved for all of you very soon, keep in mind the Verizon iPhone is just out so there will be a shakedown issue. Find it a bit humorous that Verizon has a ticket with Apple, Ive never had this issue with my AT&T iphones, SMS is a standard, since it works on mine this would seem to be a Verizon issue. Ive not had the issue with the character limit either, I hope you also reported this to Verizon.Gee, what a surprise the Apple iPhone borrows iPod functions? Who would have guessed.

My wifes iPhone4 on AT&T does something similar. Inbound texts from one of her friends does the same thing. Sometimes they show up normal, occassionally they show up garbled. I didnt ask if her friend had Verizon service, this has been happening coincidentally since the iPhone 4 verizon launch.

Answer:iPhone 4 Text Message Problems

Im having similar problem, just got Verizon iPhone - any of my friends with AT&T arent able to receive my texts and I cant get theirs. Very annoying, hopefully they fix this soon.

Answer:iPhone 4 Text Message Problems

This is NOT a network problem, this is a iPhone (iOS) problem.I get no text messages from AT&T or T-Mobile. Actually I dont get any GSM text messages really to my iPhone. I swapped phones to my droid X all text message issues were solved. I went back to the iPhone and I ended up with text messaging problems again. This time i swapped back to a basic phone VX-8560 and all my text messages are working again..Apple you need to fix this.

Answer:iPhone 4 Text Message Problems

If text is sent with emoji to AT&T it will be scrambled. I have also had scrambled text issues with Verizon iPhone 4 to other verizon phones when using extended characters such as ...

Answer:iPhone 4 Text Message Problems

I have been having the same issue with iphone 4 on verizon. to other verizon users, texts have been completely blank, and to at&t users, the question mark has been appearing between characters. i just tested the emoji emoticon theory, and it works. those texts without the emoticon send fine, and those with send garbled. deleting emoji now from my phone. i hope this solves the issue for other verizon iphone users!

Really upset right now... got the iPhone last Saturday (Verizon). During the week I noticed that certain people were ignoring some of my text messages (they were receiving a few but not all of them). When I asked them in person why they werent responding they told me they in fact never received a text message from me and were confused. This has happened with three people so far. Who knows about the people I text but never see and havent had time to determine if that is the case with them too. Didnt think I would EVER say this, but I am missing my BlackBerry right now. I paid way too much money to have to deal with this. There is also no indication that the text didnt go through (as there were on my BlackBerry and all other phones I have had in the past). I am afraid it is getting lost somewhere or even getting sent to someone else on my contacts list...help!

Answer:iPhone 4 Text Message Problems

Lauren,I am a new iPhone user as well that just left BlackBerry. I was having a similar texteng problem and I figured out it was something I was doing wrong. When sending a text message, you will notice in the message box that there are two lines to enter text. The top line is labeled Subject while the bottom has no label. What I was doing wrong was entering my message on the top Subject line and trying to send it. A text message needs to be entered on the bottom line of the message box. If you enter text on the Subject line then this will be a MMS message and you also must enter the body of your text on the line below.Hope this helps you out.

Emoticons are not working. Free or paid apps. Very frustrating. They will not work Verizon to Verizon or iPhone to iPhone either. Love to hear solutions ...

I bought my iphone4 with Verizon two days ago and it is having the exact same problem. On a longer text to someone with an AT&T iphone they are getting upsidedown question marks on everyother character, and when i sent that same text to someone with Verizon it sent blank boxed texts about 15 times... Im really hoping this gets fixed. I didnt use any unual characters, but I did use ... and ?!? and like I said, it was a longer text. Is there another application I can use for texting until this is fixed?

Answer:iPhone 4 Text Message Problems

Thank you so much for this post! I have been doing this and couldnt figure out why only half of my messages would send. You are a life saver!

Answer:iPhone 4 Text Message Problems

I recently upgraded to the droid x on the verizon network and have been having the same issues. Sometimes question marks between characters.... sometimes boxes. This does not seem to be predictable or strictly an iPhone issue. Most likely a Verizon problem.

Answer:iPhone 4 Text Message Problems

I am having the EXACT same issues, with texting. Also my texts are written as one message, but are received as multiple messages, broken sporadically, like puzzle pieces. Not only is this frustrating... it makes my phone not a functional piece of equipment. There needs to be an immediate fix. I feel very sure most people have this problem w/Verizons iPhone, only few recipients have the sincerity to step up and inform the sender that there is a problem. They automatically the problem lies with the sender. Which is far from true. It is a technical problem AND A BIG ONE.

Yes Apple You need to fix this

Answer:iPhone 4 Text Message Problems

Im having the same problem with messages being broken into pieces, when sent from my AT&T iPhone to any Verizon phone (not just the Verizon iPhone). After doing some experimenting tonight, it appears that the only messages that are breaking apart are ones that have extended characters in them. I often use ellipses … and m-dashes — to save a few characters in the count. But if I use three periods, or two hyphens (the plain type versions of ellipses and m-dashes), the messages hold together as one complete message. I havent done a lot of testing on this yet, but so far its consistent.

sweethonesty wrote:Yes Apple You need to fix thisI dont think you can really blame Apple for this. Heres why:My wife dropped AT&T and went to Virgin Mobile (which is Sprint) to get their LG Optimus V. I stuck with AT&T and got a Windows Phone 7 device (in addition to my iPhone 3GS). Today, she sent me a text and it had the upside down question mark issue.See for yourself: http://members.cox.net/wptech/insanetexts.jpgAt her workplace, where she sent the text from, shes occasionally classified as roaming on the network. Sprint has an agreement with Verizon which allows Sprint to share Verizons resources when dealing with roaming users. So, it sounds like, to me, this is a Verizon issue rather than an Apple one because here we have someone discussing it affecting the iPhone 4 on VZN, a Droid X on VZN, and my wifes Optimus V (Droid 2.2) on Sprint via Verizons resources.

Answer:iPhone 4 Text Message Problems

Virgin Mobile (even though its using the Sprint Networks) does not provide roaming, though. No Sprint coverage = no call.

I just got the iPhone 4S (Verizon) a few weeks ago and so far its been a great device, unfortunately though Ive had garbled out-going texts going through. Sent and received messages on my end look fine on my end. The issue is seen on the recipients end (Verizon cell user as well).

Its not consistent though - some texts that I send to one particular person go through as symbols (squares, dashes, etc) while others go through normal. This other person does not have a smart phone. Im wondering if that might be the problem?

Would really appreciate any suggestions or tips on how to go about fixing this issue or preventing it. Thank you!!

Answer:iPhone 4 Text Message Problems

Im having missing text message on recievers end problems.

I just bought a new factory unlocked iPhone 4s and activated it on my existing AT&T account yesterday.  I had been using my Treo 650 to text my girlfriend who has an iPhone 3gs on T-mobile.  Weve been texting hundreds of texts every month, communicating on a daily basis for the last 4 months to stay in touch as she is working accross country, we have not missed a single text message until today.

She sent me 3 at a couple hour intervals this afternoon and I recieved them from her and replied, but she did not get my responses back to her.  We were able to text back and forth this morning, and then after we talked on the phone this evening I was able to text back and forth with her, but now were wondering what has happened that its now unreliable? The only thing that changed is that I now have this iPhone 4s with the latest operating system.

I did a Google searches and found many posts from people that have iPhone 4s that are missing texts transmissions and receptions from all the major carriers. Some say its the carriers fault, others say its the phones fault, or the sim card itself, and some have had their phone replaced.  Some said they didnt get any messeges at all, some said they got text messages but they had garbled characters, others got text messages but only after several hours later. Some said it was a problem of crossing between carriers, but others said it was also a problem within each carrier too, like at&t to at&t , verizon to verizon, etc.

I just got this phone, I paid a lot to get an unlocked phone so I could move carriers as needed if problems arised, but I didnt think I was going to be having problems like this with the phone itself!

Does anyone have any solution to this problem of people not recieving the texts messages that were sent?  Is there some setting that would make it random? I hate these it always works except when it doesnt kind of problems...

Answer:iPhone 4 Text Message Problems

The only thing I have found is that if you use the three dot button, the message gets sent to some as a blank text or random symbols.  I found this simply by trial and error, and I havent had a problem since I stopped using that button.  Hope this helps some of you!  Its really frustrating!

Im having the exact same problem as everyone else, and finding all these complaints on the Apple forum AND the Verizon forums is both confirming and darn frustating too.

Only had this Verizon i4s phone for less than a week, switched from AT&T 3Gs phones we had for 3 years (with absolutely zero txt problems on AT&T, just terrible dropped call problems and no AT&T service in many areas). Switched to Verizon expecting to solve the no signal problem becuase all our verizon friends can get signals in remote areas where our AT&T phones never could.  Never imagined thered be a txt msg issue, but there is.

One of my friends in SoCal who I txtd regularly before when I was on AT&T says he now only gets every 3rd or 4th Verizon txt I send, some are blank, or just dont go thru, and pictures are a 50/50 chance of getting thru. I also sense a long delay in both directions.  Our txt threads this week often seem to make no sense to either of us becuase we are missing comments in both directions.

i definitely suspect emoticons are dangerous in txts now outside of Verizon (in verizon-to-verizon they seem to be okay).  Never worried about them with AT&T before!

If you want to be really frustrated, go read some of the Verizon forums where the Verizon support staff regularly tell people in the forum or on the phone or in the store that theyve never heard of the problem before or that it must be an Apple problem or an iOS problem or an iPhone problem.  Seriously? You should see the posts and forums on-line people

half thinking (no definitely thinking) I will go back to the Apple store where I bought these two expensive phones and where there is a Verizon corporate kiosk right outside the Apple store and complain to both of them within the 14 day and 30 day return and complaint policies, and if they say they dont know what Im talking about they can just get right on their many laptops and google verizon text message problems !!!!

Having the same issue with 4s sending texts to my dads LG Env touch both Verizon.  My brother just got a 4s yesterday and texts to the Env touch are garbled, missing characters, boxes etc. He is also on Verizon. Frustrating!

Answer:iPhone 4 Text Message Problems

The EnV Touch is an old phone. I have some vague recollection that it had some issues with certain text messages. Be sure that your not using Emoji. Check with Verizon to see if the phones have the most updated software.

Answer:iPhone 4 Text Message Problems

ive been having this problem too. whenever i send messages to other iphone users, not using imessage, my friends dont recieve the message, unless i turn on my character count and make sure that each message i send is under 70 characters. this is annying because i have to break up every single text message. spple needs to fix this.

Answer:iPhone 4 Text Message Problems

Hello all, I too had similar issues right after purchasing the iphone 4 recently.  I tried to send regular txt messages, sms, to my wifes basic LG ENV phone and she was only receiving parts of the message with a lot of words missing and some words only had a couple letters of the word there, very confusing for her.  I, however, was receiving all her txts just fine on my iPhone 4.  I finally discovered that it was the insertion of the three periods (...) into my txts that was causing the whole issue.  I removed all (...) from the same exact txts that were garbled before when sent to her and she was able to receive them completely fine without the three periods.  I had heard that Apple has issues with sending special characters to some phones, basic phones especially, but I had no idea the three periods (...) were considered a special character.  A verizon tech i spoke with suggested it might be an issue with trying to send more than 160 characters in the txt to a basic phone, but that is not the issue with my wifes phone as I sent more than 160 characters a couple of times to test it and they all worked fine after removing the (...), so it seems its not a character limit issue, at least for me.  I also noticed that when I had inserted the (...) into the original txt message, I noticed my character counter went from 195/160 or whatever the current number I was typing on the first part was, suddenly went to 195/70.  I thought the change from 160 to 70 on the last part was odd and it appears that was a good indication that something was wrong.  But like I said, as soon as I deleted all the (...) from the text the character counter went back to normal, 195/160.  Hope Ive helped some others having these issues.  My suggestion is to never use any special characters in your txts to anyone, smartphone users or otherwise, seems like it just causes problems, especially when sending to a basic phone.

Answer:iPhone 4 Text Message Problems

This makes zero sense.  I have the exact same issues.  People sporadically receive my text messages.  And emotions.  I got a brand new phone and still same issues.  Aggravating to say the least. It sounds like an apple issue!!! please Fix it!
