Straight Talk MMS & Data fix

iphone unlocked

Question:Straight Talk MMS & Data fix

My Iphone 4s 16g and 4s 32g are both unlocked and have this same issue. In iOS 6 the new settings setup meeses with my ability to fix my APN settings to get my data & mms working with my straight talk sim. BUT there is a way to fix it. I dont take credit for this at all, it was sent to me on another post I had but im just going to modify it slightly.

This is thte only way to get data & MMS working on a non-jailbroken iPhone on iOS 6 as far as im aware of right now

1. Open the Notes app (or any other stock app)

2. Go to Settings General

3. Insert the T-Mobile SIM (can be brand new/unactivated OR an old one that has had service) will bring up the Cellular option

4. Go into Cellular Cellular Data Network when it shows up

5. Immediately take out the T-Mobile SIM and put the Straight Talk SIM back in while in the Cellular Data Network tab

6. Multitask between Cellular Data Network and the Notes app back and forth until a signal from Straight Talk comes in and the default non-working data & MMS APN are automatically entered. It is important to wait until the default APN settings show up

7. Once the APNs do show up, edit them manually

8. Go toggle Airplane Mode on and off, and  then turn your iphone off and then back on

Data and MMS now work fine.... UNTIL YOUR PHONE TURNS OFF OR DIES!

To fix this follow these steps

After Step 8 and you check that your data & mms ARE working. then turn off your phone one more time and then back on againCheck that data & mms yet again. data should work but mms shouldnt.  Here is the fix; go into Settings Cellular then toggle Cellular Data off and back on and everything should be working 100000% fine now.

Dont worry about the screen back tracking you in the settings menu after you swap. Just navigate the same screen again after the ST SIM is put back in and wait for the default settings to load up again.

I have kind of the same process but just a couple more details in a guide a made after I was so happy to get MMS working on my phone! Step By Step Guide with screenshots

Before trying any of the methods  to get Data and MMS to work, first be SURE SMS or regular texting is working. Try texting to yourself. If you recieve it back youre OK if not call ST an they will work with you to get texting to work. THEN do the above steps and Data and MMS will fianlly work.

just tap the any editable filed like the apn or user name so the virtual key board pops up once u are in the settings input window. this way the screen stays long enough for you to swap the sim to ST sim. this way it works fine. this is on $s Unlocked with ios 6.0.1

Answer:Straight Talk MMS & Data fix

How did you get access into the APN settings without a T-Mobile SIM card?

Ive been doing this on unlocked iPhones for several months. Ive NEVER been able to access APN settings without doing the SIM swap. Only exception is if its jailbroken.

They only way to gain access to APN settings is by using a SIM card that is NOT related to AT&Ts network - that means T-Mobile. Straight Talk and most all these other little providers run on AT&Ts network, which is what the iPhone thinks it is - no access to APN settings.

Without the SIM swap, you cant gain access to the APN settings to get MMS working. Data is easy, MMS is not.

Answer:Straight Talk MMS & Data fix

Yes. iOS 6.1 is a little tricky. It took me two times to get it working. Youll have to do the multitasking suggested before the Cellular Data Network shows up.

I have a SIM card called gpp and unlocked it to straight talk. I was able to access the Internet but wasnt able to send and receive picture mail. I noticed that the apn number above and the one in my phone didnt match. Therefore I changed my apn settings to the ones above and followed the instructions minus the SIM card switch. The gpp sim comes with its own set of directions. With making the apn number correction, I am now able to send and receive picture mail

This worked for me. I have new 6.1.1 today and didnt work. Tried above but still not working. Did the video to a T and it worked! Listen and follow carefully.

Answer:Straight Talk MMS & Data fix

iOS 6.1.0, not 6.1.1 (that was just released to developers)

The Notes (any Apple non-data app, really) swap is definitely key for iOS 6.1, even to get Cellular Data to show up, unlike previous iOS 6.0 and 6.0.1 (which his video is showing 6.0).

He also notes his 4S is unlocked.

I didnt have to use that initially for my unlocked iPhone 5, but now it seems like a crucial step.

I really wish T-Mobile would get on the ball and update my area. I really want to switch to Solavei for $4 more per month. They soft-cap data around 4GB per month with no restrictions on how you use it, unlike Straight Talk. Straight Talk can and will cut you off for streaming Pandora, YouTube, Netflix etc., or for downloading apps over cellular.

Solavei also claims Visual Voicemail works, and you can even work on getting your phone service for FREE with the potential to earn some extra money as well. How often do you hear of that from a cellular phone service provider?

Since Solavei runs on T-Mobiles network, its easy to access and change the APN settings. That alone is worth $4 more per month to me. Sadly, T-Mobiles network is the major holdup for me at this point.

Answer:Straight Talk MMS & Data fix

That is an unlocking SIM card that goes under the normal SIM card. You do realize Apple can and will (at some point) block that from working, right?

Those arent a real unlock solution. For what you paid for that, you couldve had it officially IMEI unlocked from various vendors online, bought a T-Mobile SIM card, and youd still have extra money in your pocket. And, the IMEI unlock is permanent. iOS updates wont effect it at all.

And, if you upgrade to an iPhone 5 (nano-SIM card), youll have to buy another one to fit. The problem is, the SIM slot in the iPhone 5 is even slimmer than the 4 & 4S. I had to sand down a T-Mobile SIM (cut to nano-SIM size) to get it to go into the SIM slot. Theres no way 2 SIM cards stacked will fit in there.

I have an ATT unlocked 3gs on the iOS 6.1.2. I just got my tmobile sim card and I followed the instructions to the letter - several times. After turning my phone off and on, I never got MMS working. So, following your instructions, I tried about 3 other APN settings with slight differences - still nothing. I have no idea how to get MMS working.

Answer:Straight Talk MMS & Data fix

This did not work on my locked iPhone 5 that was running 6.0.2 and 6.1 -- I was kicked out of all apps and prompted to (unsuccessfully) activate immediately on inserting the TMO sim card. However the steps outined above did finally work once I had my phone unlocked by AT&T.

Currently the AT&T version of the Straight Talk SIM card identifies as MCC/MNC 310410 ... same as an AT&T/Cingular SIM card.

When a SIM card is inserted with the MCC/MNC 310410 .. i.e. Straight Talk/ATT/Cingular, it loads the 310410 profile. Unfortunately were forced to find other means of making our data and MMS work, i.e. mobileconfig profiles and tricks like this.

/System/Library/Carrier Bundles/iPhone/310410 is a symbolic link to /System/Library/Carrier Bundles/iPhone/ATT_US.bundle -- so when you insert your Straight Talk SIM card (310410) you are loading an AT&T profile that is prohibited (Thanks, AT&T!) from editing your carrier data settings.

TMobiles MCC/MNC is unknown to the iPhone, and the GPP masks the true MCC/MNC of your SIM card ... also registering as an MCC/MNC unknown to the phone ... so the iPhone does not see it as 310410 and load the AT&T profile associated with 310410.

Either one of these SIMs (Tmobile or a GPP) will load Unknown.bundle  which is NOT prohibited from editing carrier data settings.

Ive forced the Straight Talk SIM to use Unknown.bundle by doing the following on the phone -- unfortunately this is not a task for the faint of heart:

1) mv /System/Library/Carrier Bundles/iPhone/310410 /System/Library/Carrier Bundles/iPhone/310410.old

2) ln -s /System/Library/Carrier Bundles/iPhone/Unknown.bundle /System/Library/Carrier Bundles/iPhone/310410

3) rm -rf /private/var/mobile/Library/Preferences/com.apple.operator.plist

4) Setttings - General - Reset - Reset Network Settings

I lost LTE support -- which Straight Talk doesnt support at the moment -- and my phone no longer falsely advertises itself as having a 4G connection, but I am now permanently able to edit cellular data settings on my Straight Talk SIM without any third party software or hardware.

My money is on ST issuing a SIM with their own MCC/MNC, correct settings, and no restrictions on APN editing in the future -- but that probably wont work in an otherwise locked AT&T phone.

Now do I have to activate a tmobile or simple SIM card because they wont issue me one unless I buy a plan or can I just buy one from eBay and try it with that

Answer:Straight Talk MMS & Data fix

Dead on the money... I had tried likewise on a 3gs...that was working with the settings and then suddenly quit ?

Tried several times but then watched the youtube and did the notes trick and wham...done MMS back and working.. The video works but does go a little slow..maybe thats a good thing

Basically insert tmobile or other sim card... I use a China Mobile card I have.

Go to settings/ General/ Cellular/ Cellular Data Network

leaving  this page open, now double click the home button  and open notes

At this point switch out sim cards back to the straight talk sim.... Leaving the notes page open wait for the home icon to appear in the upper left hand network window at the top.. Once it says home....

Double click the home button again, click on the settings icon that is at the bottom in active applications...The cellular Data Network page will still be there...now type in exactly what is shown below then click out of the cellular data network page back to cellular page...

Now double click the home button again and try to MMS ......you should be rolling with MMS ..worked for me...YEAH!

I WAS USING SIMPLE MOBILE AND HAD NO PROBLEMS AT ALL.

I LEFT THE COUNTRY AND TURNED MY PHONE OFF FOR ABOUT 3 WEEKS.

CAN ANYONE HELP? THANKS

Answer:Straight Talk MMS & Data fix

If you want to use Straight Talks newly adopted LTE network. I have posted a short video showing the proper APN settings which works on both iOS and Android devices. MMS works as well. I got these settings after a 40 minutes ordeal with Straight Talks call-in customer service, so I figured I share the knowledge and save you all some time.

Note: I believe LTE only works if you get the new SIMs provided from Straight Talk, as I used an older microSIM from Striaght Talk before this one and only was able to access 3G speeds.

Thanks for the info. I didnt know they started LTE until I was notified by your post. I received the new Net10 AT&T SIM card yesterday, and Ill get to test it out within the next week (no LTE here, but a city I frequent has it).

Two Net10 reps I spoke to said the APN settings direct from their site are automatic for LTE. Im not worried about MMS at this point.

Hi I cannot receive pictures by text but can send them. I have 4s now on the tracfone network with Straight talk. This is a continual problem whenever they update. I have done the sim swap many times now to adjust to the changes but this time it does not seem to allow texts to come in. Not sure why it is frustrating. Thanks for any help.

Answer:Straight Talk MMS & Data fix

MMS is now officially supported under iOS 7 for Straight Talk and Net10 BYOP iPhones.

Go to straighttalk.com from Safari.

Select SIM card program

Select Data/APN settings

Select AT&T Data Settings

Install the profile. Youll get a notification shortly after saying theres a carrier settings update. Install it.

Done.

Youll notice the carrier will now show TFW instead of HOME. Thats when you know the settings are complete.

MMS has been working fine for me since the update.

Youll also notice itll now show 3G instead of 4G. Theres no difference. The 4G symbol was only part of AT&Ts false advertising to begin with.

Answer:Straight Talk MMS & Data fix

We did all these things and I can receive pictures from other iphone users because of I message but I cannot receive pictures from other non iphones. It has to be in the settings somewhere because I know pictures can come in and pictures can go out to iphone folks but not for other phones.

Answer:Straight Talk MMS & Data fix

Dont waste your time. Straight Talk keeps changing settings and not notifying users. None of the APN modifying sites get it right.

I resorted to not upgrading to any train of IOS7 and keeping a Jailbroken 6.x version so that I can have the ability to manually enter APN Settings and data settings.

None of the publicized settings work.

When I do get one to work, I can send a picture in an SMS with my wireless turned off. This works for about one or two days, then just magically stops working. I have to completely change the settings, reboot the phone several times, and put the original settings back in, reboot again, then test. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesnt. I have screenshot the whole process, but Straight Talks BYOP (Bring Your Own Phone) plan wont even troubleshoot with me because they insist other iPhone users arent complaining, so it must be a specific-to-me device issue. I am FORCED to jailbreak the device because of the limitations introduced in changing APNs and data settings in IOS6 and IOS7.

Being somewhat competent with computers, IT, geekery and communications, I recently came to these conclusions:

1) Straight Talk is a great deal if all you want to do is use simple data and phone calling.

2) More than slight data use with Straight Talk is a joke.

3) Using a current and thus more agile device like an iPhone or current Android phone is just plain Stupid with Straight Talk - the Data Rates they dont harrass you for using arent sufficient for basic smartphone operations (iCloud, etc) and will get your data capped, limited, or terminated. (they prohibit streaming in their TOS, I mean... streaming and or downloading is the terminology. Last time I knew, you needed to download an html file to load a frickin web page. Thats how bad this company is.

4) Holy crap, Im good at IT. Why am I wasting all of my time trying to make a purposefully-limited-by-the-manufacturer-device work with a cut-rate limited-service-providing constantly-complaining company that wont support its users... to save what.. $13-$27 per month? Im easily wasting 2-4 hrs a week just changing settings and rebooting to maintain the ability to text message. I make more than $9 per hour. This is not worth my wasted time.

I bought a Galaxy Note III am on Verizon, and you know what? I pay exactly $56/month. And do you know what is broken about my phone and/or the service? absolutely nothing.

Also, my 6 year old son now has a really nice wireless device that plays music, takes pictures, and plays IOS games. Since it was jailbroken I used unix science to disable the cellular network. On my wireless network my kid filter keeps most things safe and I block things like youtube, etc.

Im getting WAY more bang for my buck using the iPhone as a kid toy instead of as a half-usable device on a crappy not-really-an-official-carrier network.

If youre going to keep drinking the Apple kool-aid, get on one of the official supported carriers for their devices and deal with it.

Otherwise, for gosh sakes, if you make more than $9 an hour and are not geeking out on attempting to fix a problem for the sheer fun of it, save yourself some headache and money (in the form of your free time) and get the **** away from Straight Talk, or at least downgrade to a phone that Straight Talk supports, like the three year old Samsung Galaxy Precedent running Android version negative 8 or whatever. At least they will need to be held to making your old device send a picture on the SMS network, which according to Straight Talk is more difficult than orchestrating a moon landing.

Cheers, free your cycles -

Answer:Straight Talk MMS & Data fix

Make sure you have MMS turned on. MMS has been working fine for me since the iOS 7 and Carrier updates. Remove any custom APN settings/profiles, then install the official one from Straight Talk. You could also try Reset Network Settings, then install the official APN from Straight Talks mobile site using Safari.

Dont pay attention to n8ouz. He/shes obviously someone who has an issue with iOS 7 or cant live without a jailbreak.

Everyone I know with an iPhone on Net10 or Straight Talk has no problems with MMS working since those updates. Ive even updated to iOS 7.1 beta, and everything is still working fine.

Answer:Straight Talk MMS & Data fix

To the contrary, I didnt have to Jailbreak my phone until Straight Talk told me I had to after the fourth or fifth support call.

They said without access to the correct menu settings, I would not be able to turn on SMS. I asked them how, they could not tell me.

I spoke to three service personnel, and finally spoke to one who told me that there was some SIM card trick (ordered two off of ebay setting me back some cash and several weeks, the time spent without service was most frustrating) and then also told me that I could jailbreak the phone and the menu would appear.

I did not want to jailbreak my phone, and they said those were my options. I specificially asked them the pointed question are you stating that I would need to jailbreak my phone to get my phone to correctly function on your network to use the SMS media services. and they would not answer. Their answer was that they recommend I take appropriate action to enable my device to allow the settings to be changed. So I asked you mean jailbreak it. And they said we dont recommend it but it would work.

Pretty crappy, I said.

So, I did.

At some point, upgrading from IOS 6.a to 6.b (forget exact version) the ability to jailbreak went away. My picture SMS support didnt work for several months until someone came out for a jailbreak for that specific version of IOS. Which sucked. So now I cant upgrade to a newer IOS until I can confirm a Jailbreak exists and works for it (untethered) so that my crappy picture SMS doesnt get broken.

Ideal? Heck no.

My idea? Far from it. Just wanted a phone that worked.

Left both Apple and Straight Talk, since neither took ownership of fault in a crap situation.

You can decide not to pay attention to me if you wish. Thats fine. Ive just spent more than a year with spotty picture SMS capability, often without data entirely when the ST APN settings for data changed unannounced and I need to google for what the new settings are. The amount of time it spends broken far exceeds the amount of time it spends working. For more than a year now.

If thats not important to you, fine, ignore me.

Im just sharing my experiences (which were poor for the pithy amount of savings ST resulted in compared to the headaches) in the hopes of saving someone hours (literally) per week of frustration.

Answer:Straight Talk MMS & Data fix

As I said, iOS 7 and (2 now) Carrier Updates later, MMS and data work without performing the SIM swap. UPDATES TO iOS DO NOT BREAK IT!

I started with Straight Talk and switched to Net10. Theyre one in the same. If you want to be stuck behind by a year, more power to you. Im just stating that data AND MMS (picture messages, SMS is NOT picture messaging) are working perfectly fine for me and everyone I know with an iPhone on iOS 7 and Straight Talk or Net10.

If you dont want to pay attention to me, thats fine. If, however, you want your iPhone to work, youll do as I recommended above. If not, then youre just someone who likes to chronically complain when a simple solution is right in your face.

As soon as I updated to iOS 7, I received a Carrier Update that enabled MMS. I had the official APN from Net10 (Straight Talk would be the same, just user their mobile site). The dead giveaway is the carrier name is no longer HOME - it now says TFW.

Answer:Straight Talk MMS & Data fix

I have the exact same situation.  Would love to know how to resolve it.

Answer:Straight Talk MMS & Data fix

Same for me! iOS & and a carrier update now allows MMS. It now says TFW instead of HOME on my phone as well. I have an unlocked iphone 4 on Straight Talk with no problems.

Answer:Straight Talk MMS & Data fix

Mine says TFW also.  Running ios 7.0.4. I can access the internet using safari.  I can send and receive picture messages to/from another iphone.  However, I cannot send or receive picture messages to/from a non-iphone.  Any suggestions?

Also, where exactly do you find the official APN settings for an iphone on straighttalk?  This page doesnt have iphone as an option: http://www.straighttalk.com/wps/portal/home/support/apn

Answer:Straight Talk MMS & Data fix

The APN settings are automatic as long as youve installed the official Straight Talk APN profile from their mobile site using Safari. Have you installed the Carrier updates? The latest one I received no longer displays 4G, and instead shows 3G as it should. Seems Tracfone Wireless is not playing AT&Ts faux 4G game with this latest Carrier update.

For those of us who are not having problems with MMS automatically working, is your iPhone officially unlocked, either by Apple or your previous carrier (AT&T)?

Mine is unlocked. I have no issues with MMS working since these updates. I even get LTE since I purchased an updated SIM card directly from Net10s website. I know the MMS issues has nothing to do with the updated SIM card since the others I know with either Net10 or Straight Talk are able to send and receive MMS just fine with older SIM cards. They are unlocked, however.

Help?

Answer:Straight Talk MMS & Data fix

When you go into settings-general-cellular scroll down and you should see where you would put in password name etc. Once you see that screen you need to go to notepad put the other sim card back in and once your network shows in top left hand corner of the screen tap home button again to return to the cellular network page where you can put the data in. I finally had to get another sim card from Straight talk and the settings were all ok without having to do the sim swap method. Good luck. It may take a couple tries before you find the right screen to add the apn values.

Im happy for you that yours is working but my iPhone 4s (locked to att)worked for over a year and then all of a sudden I could not receive MMS about a week ago. Around 12/20/13. ive done everything you said and I still cannot receive MMS. Do you think that having it unlocked would really make a difference? Mine worked flawlessly for so long without being unlocked. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!!
