Question:Why oh why are my emails still being rejected by the server

I receive emails just fine - but when I try to send emails from my phone, the messages were unable to be sent due to the the address being rejected by the server. I checked the troubleshooting guide, and have turned WiFi off, turned my other SMTP servers on, and deleted the original synced account and added it manually. When I added it, I had to authenticate without SSL as my ISP doesnt use SSL for my outgoing mail server (Bigpond ADSL, Im talking to you). I rewrote the message, tried sending again, and got the same rejected message. I know the email is valid as I use it all the time from my MacBook. So - is the lack of SSL the problem - and if, so, will I not be able to send emails from my phone unless I swap ISP? Or have I missed something?

Most internet service provides block the use of SMTP servers that are outside of their network or not provided by the ISP being used for your internet connection unless the SMTP server is authenticated. The same applies when connected to the internet via your cellular providers network. Most ISPs do not provide an authenticated SMTP server for the email account they provide with their internet service.
Do you have a wireless network at home with Bigpond being used for the internet connection with your wireless network?
Are you able to send messages with your Bigpond account with the Mail.app on your MacBook regardless the ISP being used for your internet connection with your MacBook?

Hi Allan, thanks for the reply. At home, I use Bigpond cabled ADSL (its all thats available as I Iive outside the metro area). Two of my email accunts are on a TPP Internet server who host my website. My phone uses the Vodafone 3G network, and their SMTP server. Despite the host of servers, mail goes in and out just fine on my MacBook. I did just call Bigpond and a very nice tech support guy helped me enable SSL on my MacBook - at which point I stopped being able to send and receive emails at all. Needless to say SSL is now off.
I suspect there are just too many servers involved. Would MobileMe be a solution?

Youre welcome.
If you dont have a wireless network at home, this means your MacBook is connected to your ADSL router via an Ethernet connection.
If so, this is why you are able to send messages with your Bigpond account using the Mail.app on your Mac since your Mac is connected to the internet with Bigpond as the internet service provider. When your iPhone is connected to the internet via Vodafones cellular network, your iPhone is using Vodafone as the internet service provider, and what I included with my previous post applies. If Bigpond had an authenticated SMTP server, this wouldnt be a problem.
I access a business POP account and my MobileMe account with the iPhones mail client. Both email accounts have an authenticated SMTP server and Ive never had any problems sending messages with either account regardless which ISP Im using for my internet connection with various wi-fi networks that I use, or when connected to the internet via AT&Ts cellular network.
You can access a Gmail account as an IMAP account with the Mail.app on your Mac and with the iPhones Mail client keeping all server stored mailboxes synchronized with the server automatically with each, Gmail has an authenticated SMTP server, and the account is free.
A MobileMe account has an authenticated SMTP server, is accessed as an IMAP account, includes Push access for received messages with the iPhones mail client, includes over the air syncing for contact info, calendar events, and Safari Bookmarks with the Address Book, iCal, and Safari on your Mac, but is not free.

Its official - I AM AN IDIOT.
As soon as changed the outgoing mail server on the iPhone to the Vodafone SMTP server, rather than Bigpond, everything was fine. Your last reply tipped me into the very simple answer, so thank you for taking the time to help.
