iphone unlocked

i got the same issue. i already contact apple care told me is a new issue and theyre investigating.

for now, i found no solution (i tried also to downgrade and reinstall, or renew network setting etc).

may i ask you if under settinggeneralinfo you still have the wifi mac addess?

because in case u have no wifi mac address, its only the wifi module stuck for high temperature, and u only need to cold it fast and it start working again. if u still have the mac addess is my same situation.

from the iphone configuration utility i got this log (and you can see that the wifi driver cannot be found from the system) :

I am having the same issue as well, which began when I downloaded the previous operating system.  I spoke with Apple Customer Service in July and also tried a full iPhone restore.  That didnt resolve the issue.  The Customer Service representative said the issue might be fixed when the new operating system iOS7 was released in the fall.  I just downloaded it, and the wi-fi is still grayed out.  Could this be a hardware versus a software issue in the 4S?

Hi dragondx2 Ive checked my settings general about, I still got the wi-fi address in it, if this is the case what could I possibly do to solve the problem? thank you,.

Answer:Wifi greyed out on iphone 4s with ios 7

hi Carla,

so if u still have mac address, were on same page.

i can told you what I tried until now:

1) downgrade to iOS 6.1.3

2) reinstalling iOS 7.0

3) heat and cold down the wifi chip

4) DFU restoring to iOS 6.1.3 and 7

5) restore several backup of settings

6) initializing and/or restore network factory setting

7) initializing and/or restore ALL factory setting

8) other and repeatly phone inizialization procedure

until now, nothing seems work

So i suggest you to take the iphone to the apple customer care and/or wait for an iOS 7 update that can fix the situation.

on next days i will try other procedures and i will let you know if them works;

but anyway, dont try to open/breck the phone because it can damage it at all, and most important it can not be safety for you.

another suggestion is to take the phone to a phone recovery shop so a technician can help you to fix the phone (but probably it is not only a software fix, it will need to change something in hardware).

i hope that apple will fix this or propose to customers an exchange with a new/regenerate phone.

post here for any further question

bye

hi,im pretty sure this will be funny.

after put the phone into freezer for 20  minutes (turned off), the wifi start again

(i read something about that on forums but i cant believe it really works).

anyway this solution is only temporary because after a couple of hourse the phone is not able to connect again on a wifi network. i will try to downgrade again to check if this solution will be not only temporary.

i know this can be very hurtful for the phone

My iphone 4S can use WIFI after take hairdryer(hot) go to top iphone 5-10 min.

I hope that can help you.

Answer:Wifi greyed out on iphone 4s with ios 7

If your wifi is greyed out do the following:

1) Put your phone on a plastic bag and then in the fridge (not the freezer!).

Wait around 20 minutes to take it out.

2) The moment you take it out reset your network settings.

When the phone turns on, your wifi wont be greyed out.

But...

The problem you might have is that it wont pick up any networks at all. Which is my case.

What happened with me is really the same except Wifi was working for almost a day but suddenly both Wifi and Bluetooth has stopped at once please any advice

Answer:Wifi greyed out on iphone 4s with ios 7

Hi all,

in my case, if i freeze the phone for 30 min, i have about 8 hours of wifi connection working (as u can see from the new log due to  restaring after cooling):

Sep 21 10:40:22  wifid15 Notice: WiFi:401445: Created AWD dispatch Q and server connection for component ID 0x9

anyway, this solution seems to be only temporary, because after some hours, the wifi is still selectable in the settings menu, but cannot find or connect to wifi networks.

I see that anyway for now is a good workaround for me because the iphone see as the wifi comoponent is Ok even if it cannot find networks  that means the ios doesnt not speed down or stuck in process where wifi settings are checked by the software (As example: if u have the wifi greyed out in ios 7 and u try to go on settinggeneralinfo , or u try to take a picture with localization ON, the phone speed down or stuck.

having the wifi NOT greyed out - even  if not working -  the phone works fine in all other function).

i also see that the bluetooth signal seems to be affected to this situation (even if is still working but with some loss of signal) , this suggest me that probably the issue may be not located in the wifi chip, but shoud be the wifi/blue antenna.

if i have any other news i will write here.

this seems not related to problem. anyway just in doubt i tried and it doesnt work

Answer:Wifi greyed out on iphone 4s with ios 7

I had the same problem and it was right after I got Find My Iphone

So this is the problem so you have to get rid of find my iphone, to do that

1. delete the find my iphone app

2. Settings - Icloud - then switch i cloud off

3. power off your iphone and then your wifi should be working when it comes back on

Answer:Wifi greyed out on iphone 4s with ios 7

in iOS 7  find my iphone is still not an app, but is a part of the operating system, so u cant remove.

anyway, even if deselected the wifi still not work, and from the log seems to be not relelated to this feature.

Answer:Wifi greyed out on iphone 4s with ios 7

I have this EXACT problem too. The Wifi is generally greyed out, then after restarting it about 50 times, updating it 12 time, standing on my head and doing the twist it comes back but only briefly.

Im spending a fortune on 3G because of it!

My bluetooth is also affected. HEEEELP!

Answer:Wifi greyed out on iphone 4s with ios 7

So I finally found a trick to get it up and running again...for now. Turn off the phone and the turn it on again. Enter the pass code and leave it for about a minute before entering the pin. Not sure if its just a fluke or how long wifi will stay connected for the moment, but at least it has at last connected for me again

Answer:Wifi greyed out on iphone 4s with ios 7

hi all,

only for update: on yesterday i tried to change the wifi antenna/bluetooth/buzzer piece (hoping that having still the wifi mac address the trouble is the antenna and not on the chip) but this has not solved the issue. on next days, if i can, i will try to replace the wifi chip and i will let u know.

Answer:Wifi greyed out on iphone 4s with ios 7

Hi. I have the same problem. WIFI and bluetooth are grayed out and I can not turn them on. Hope that this is some software issue. I dont want to replace any hardware because I am out of warranty. I have iphone 4S 16GB with IOS7.

Answer:Wifi greyed out on iphone 4s with ios 7

Has anyone heard about an estimated time table for this problem to be fixed. I was able to restore my 4s to get wifi working again once or approx. 30 minutes.

Answer:Wifi greyed out on iphone 4s with ios 7

Apple does not believe that it is an issue with the iOS7 update and states that it is a hardware failure unrelated to update and that it was ready to fail before the update and would have anyway in a few days.  Those that are outside of their 12 month warrantee and that do not have AppleCare will have to pay to replace or repair the iPhone.

Answer:Wifi greyed out on iphone 4s with ios 7

That is complete and utter BS. Apple, once again, have issued a dodgie update that messes with the phones and then have the nerve to turn around and say that its the phone? I am really getting tired of this crap. All Ill say is there was never this level of dissatisfaction when Steve Jobes (RIP) was at the helm. I am seriously considering taking a Small Claims Court action against them.

Answer:Wifi greyed out on iphone 4s with ios 7

My is the same. Initially it was unable to connect to my home network, then i try to off the wifi (the button is still able to be switch). But after i off it, ibeocme grey and do not allow me to on again.

And if Apple said it is HW oroblem, then how come i am able to see the MAC address of Wi-Fi Address

Answer:Wifi greyed out on iphone 4s with ios 7

Ive had the same problem since updating to ios7 (greyed out wifi etc.).

Ive been on Apple chat for over 2 hours and they are not prepared to fix (as out of warranty). I went to my cellular provider (Vodafone) who state that it is a known issue by Apple! They wont fix the phone for free even though its a result of an ios update!

Theyve told me (on Apple Chat) that the ios update only highlighted the problem - the hardware was about to fail in any case! Not sure how true that is!

Answer:Wifi greyed out on iphone 4s with ios 7

Hi i have same expirience as loniepwith apple chat support. Solution is probably hardware repair and we have to pay. I try to obtain information about new wifi part with no luck. What if IOS7 blow up new wifi module same as old one?

Answer:Wifi greyed out on iphone 4s with ios 7

Same situation here - Ive updated the phone software to iOS 7 (I have 4S), it worked for couple of days and then it stopped working, it just greyed out, cant switch it on - Apple exchanged the phone and the wifi worked for 5days until I have installed update 7.0.2 and it stopped working again. Ive restored the phone so many times, and nothing changed. So its definitely not a hardware issue as it happened with a brand new phone as well.

Answer:Wifi greyed out on iphone 4s with ios 7

Same here, it sounds like full BS from apple. WiFi and all functions has been perfectly well and my phone has been gently used generally and for sure from update to iOS7. WiFi started to loose connection to networks and refresh the list all the time then it got greyed out, came back for a short while then permanently beeing greyed out. Freezing the phone to make it work is a clear sign of HW failure. The fact that a lot of people experience the same problem shortly after iOS update on totally different ages of phones is also clearly pointing out iOS bug as the cause. Why does it take different time from update to malfunction, well, circuits are different, usage is different, for example in how warm environment is it used. Was phone used as GPS while charging and lots of apps running in a hot car, the phone most likely was extremly much warmer then a phone used minimally.

APPLE!!! Take care of this! We know you make huge margins and they must be used to sponsor misstakes that are caused by YOUR misstakes. Believe me I know my homework, Im working in electronics business with embedded development and HW manufacturing and testing.

Answer:Wifi greyed out on iphone 4s with ios 7

Apple needs to step up and do the right thing. Telling us our wifi was about to die anyway is total BS! Not only my wifi but my hotspot stopped working. It worked for one day and down it went.

step up apple and fix our phones...for free. You are the ones that killed them. Not one of us buys the wifi about to go crap.

Answer:Wifi greyed out on iphone 4s with ios 7

Apple just let us downgrade to latest iOS6. Maybe this will solve the problem. Unless wifi module was totaly burn out.

Answer:Wifi greyed out on iphone 4s with ios 7

Do you have a link? Cannot seem to find the download to downgrade.

Thanks

Answer:Wifi greyed out on iphone 4s with ios 7

Downloading old ios is easy but during instalation there is some error. Probably it is not authorized or signed by apple. I hope they will let us do that.

Answer:Wifi greyed out on iphone 4s with ios 7

Same problem here. iPhone out of warranty. Told ios7 would fix problem. Waited and upgraded to ios7. No use. Apple just not taking any responsibility. Told now have to replace handset myself. But how is that fair when its obviously a mass issue with an apple product.

Answer:Wifi greyed out on iphone 4s with ios 7

Hi Dragondx2

Anyupdate on your testing ?

i have the similar issue as yours, but i found something wierd. my wifi is grey but my Bluetooth is working (NOT normally).

It seem that the signel is not strong. When i try to make it detect/pair with my bluetooth earpiece i have to make it very near (less than 10 cm apart), then it can detect. i.e. if i let them to be about more than 10 cm apart, my iphone will not detect the earpiece.

Could this be antennal issue, but u mention u have replace the antennal. was it working

Answer:Wifi greyed out on iphone 4s with ios 7

hi thye666,

the last thing i do was the replace of rear bottom antenna (wifi-bluetooth-buzzer piece) but it still doesnt work.

im wating for the arriving of new wifi chip ic (the real chip on logic board) to replace it, and  then i hope it works again, but for now I have no good news.

as soon as i got it (i think on the end of next week) i update here my results.

the only thing that for sure is working is that if i cool down the phone (in the fridge) the wifi work again for a couple of hours (and this is the real mistery of all this story).

i will let you know

Answer:Wifi greyed out on iphone 4s with ios 7

just another point: the downgrade to ios6 is the first thing i tried (because after you update, you have about 2 day to downgrade via itunes), but the wifi still doesnt work.

here the log of downgrade to ios6:

....

Sep 20 12:25:16 iPhone SpringBoard67 Error: WiFi: Consulting no-sdio-devices property.

Sep 20 12:25:16 iPhone SpringBoard67 Error: WiFi: no-sdio-devices property not found.

....

(so exactly as in ios7), so i think that if you are able to see the wifi mac address, but it doesnt work, the chip is compromised.

bye

Answer:Wifi greyed out on iphone 4s with ios 7

ho thye666, here a last thing.

also in my case, the bluetooth is working even if, like i said in my first post on this topic, i see that it is working worse than in ios6.

i have handfree kit in my car, and i never had signal problem to use it, but after ios7 (and the wifi issue) the signal start to be not-so-good with some loss of performance.

so im pretty sure that those things are releated.

Answer:Wifi greyed out on iphone 4s with ios 7

I had this exact problem wifi greyed out and I was advised to backup and restore - in the process lost 45 video clips - and then wait for the new IOS 7 which would rectify the problem i.e. greyed out wifi,   I duly upgraded only by plugging into my computer and using the wifi from the old 7 year old laptop as I had no wifi with the all singing all dancing Iphone 4s - expectation was high but unfortunately epic fail.  During this time I used up my complete data allowance (never happened before) and read copious amounts of posts online by people experiencing exactly the same problem - so I took the advice of one post which still is a mystery to me - heat the earpiece for about 3 minutes  turn off phone and turn back on again - hey presto wifi restored - WIERD but this was a week ago and it is still working... just saying....

Answer:Wifi greyed out on iphone 4s with ios 7

I am really annoyed and dissapointed in Apple with the way they are behaving over this. Can they not just supply a fix? Or just let us roll back to iOS6?. I am seriously considering moving both mine and my business phones to android.

I did have some luck with the iOS7.0.2 update in that the wifi worked for a few hours and then stopped. I have tried the restore again a number of times and it brings the wifi back for a limited time. However my bluetooth is gone completely. I spend a lot time on the road and without bluetooth I cannot connect to my car kit.

Answer:Wifi greyed out on iphone 4s with ios 7

I tried the cooler trick. I put my iphone 4S into cooler. 1 hour in cooler - then - reset network settings. Voala. Wifi and bluetooth are back. But after 10 minutes it is all gone again. Hope that apple will stand up and repair it somehow.

Hi all,

Another update from me :

Today i decided try the hair dryer system so i removed the back panel of iphone, remove the emi shield on the wifi chip( so the upper back of phone) and i dry for 60 second.... So now im writing here by my iphone wifi.... I will told you for how much time it works, but now is clear that is only in the temperature difference the issue.

Bye

Answer:Wifi greyed out on iphone 4s with ios 7

I am having the exact same problem on my iPhone 4S after installing iOS7

Today I installed iOS7 and since the upgrade the wifi is now greyed out and I can not get it switched on anymore.

Tried several restarts, have reset the network settings but all to no avail.

However Bluetooth still does work, but the BT sound quality has drastically deteriorated since the upgrade to iOS7 to the extent that people can no longer understand me, making BT no longer usuable.

(until this morning the use of Bluetooth was flawless and crystal clear using my Plantronics Voyager headset)

So far in this discussion I see no response from Apple in this issue.

So it seems we are all out in the dark on possible solutions which only Apple can provide.

My iPhone is now a little over a year old and I find it hard to accept that Apple would not assist her customers in solving a problem caused as a result of the iOS7 upgrade.

Furthermore I NEED my wifi when travelling abroad and I fly to Asia next week. Without a working iPhone with wifi I can not communicate with my office.

So if Apple does not come to the rescue Ill have no choice but to purchase a new phone. And I can assure you, in that case it will mostlikely not be an iPhone.

Therefor my plea here on this Apple website to the Apple support team:

Please come to our rescue and assist your customers in finding a solution to this problem!!

Answer:Wifi greyed out on iphone 4s with ios 7

My iPhone 4S is going in for service tomorrow after having tried all the tricks (except anything involving temperature changes) to no avail.  Since updating it to ios 7, the wifi button is greyed out, I have no bluetooth and no reception to the point where the Apple representative I spoke to over the phone asked to ring me back on my home line and added the reception issue to my file.

Thankfully in Europe its covered for 2 years so barring any unforeseen problems, I should either be getting a fixed phone or a new phone.

So disappointed that a company like Apple could make such a huge mistake!

My wifi became greyed out today. Took it to Apple and they said it was because of the update. Out of warranty so I have to pay $200 for a new one. AT&T, same thing. I am a developer with several apps for iOS, now I DO NOT suggest getting an iPhone. I will probably be breaking my contact and getting a Android, and stop offering iOS apps. Its sad when a company releases an update that breaks their device and they want you to pay for it. Until now I was all about the Apple, now it looks as though its best to move away from them.

Whoever you talked to at the Apple Store or AT&T Store was incorrect.  The iOS 7 update did not damage your phone.  Your hardware was defective, and the process of the update (not the update itself) over-stressed the wi-fi chip that was already defective, from date of purchase.

Your device was out of warranty, and you reported a defect after the warranty expired.  You got a replacement for a significant disocunt, and your warranty got reinstated for 90 days.

If you had reported the defect before the warranty expired, you would have gotten a free replacement.

Answer:Wifi greyed out on iphone 4s with ios 7

That reply about before and after the warranty is all well and good except when the phone works absolutely fine before an update the sends it over the edge.  How would one know there is a defect in the phone when it works fine?  why would you question it?  Apple quality and all...  Those of us having problems found out about these defects AFTER Apple issued an update that somehow set the defect in motion.  Regardless as to whether the defect was there before the update or not, its the update that some how activated the defect.  Plus, how can Apple justify producing defective phones and not replacing them?  Either way, the fault lies with Apple and they should be responsible for it.

Im considering myself lucky for the moment because I live in the EU and the laws cover me but yes, it may be time for a switch from Apple the next time around.

Answer:Wifi greyed out on iphone 4s with ios 7

I had the same issue a week after upgrading to ios7... Until five minutes ago.... And hopefully it will last! Nothing worked (didnt try temperature crazy tricks though) anyway, after searching for an answer everywhere I found this in an Australian online newspaper:

One of the most common complaints we are hearing from users is that they have been unable to access wi-fi and Bluetooth after installing iOS7.

Here are a few things you can try:

- Change the name of your device

The new operating system seems to have an issue with apostrophes. At least when it comes to wi-fi.

Check out your device name. If it is called something like “Claire’s iPhone” it could be the apostrophe that is causing the problem.

To change your device name go to Settings General About Name. Tap on the name to edit it and remove the apostrophe. Save the change. Switch off your phone and then switch it back on again.

Your wi-fi should be working.

AND IT IS!!!!!! Again, hopefully it will last....

I tried rename my iphone but with no luck. Only solution working for me now is the fridge. I put my iphone into fridge and at least I can update my app there.

Answer:Wifi greyed out on iphone 4s with ios 7

Well... It lasted a good ten minutes!!!    back to searching for a solution until Apple decides to do something about it!

Answer:Wifi greyed out on iphone 4s with ios 7

After everything Ive done, taking out the apostrophy on my device name (which worked for 5 minutes), I went to my network information and I changed the HTTP PROXY from OFF to AUTO and now my WIFI IS WORKING!! So far so good!!

I have try everything and it keeps GREY and NOT WORKING! I wento to Vodafone to check it here in Spain and they say that they didnt found the problem reported, and when they gave it to me it worked! and when I arrive home, update the IOS 7 and all.... it turned off again.

This is very convenient for Vodafone wich I will be paying a fortune at the end of the month....

i have the same issue. and im from China.

i tried almost all ways i searched with Google except dryer.

its still greyed.

i went after sales center and was told that i have to pay RMB1897 to change the new wifi parts. Shit!

the warranty was passed on sep 5, and you apple realse the update just on time. ****!

after reading this thread, i got you guys can get fix free in EU and only cost $200 in U.S.

it does shame on you, apple!

after using 4s, i did thought apples hardware is qualified, but you forced me to believe you are a **** both on hardware and on software!

of cause my next phone will not be a apple.

After I upgraded my iphone 4S to IOS 7, the Wifi and bluetooth worked for 2 days and stopped working after that. My wifi is grayed out. I have tried all the tricks nothing is working for me.

I went to apple store, the tech after running the diagnosis tells me that he is not able to identify what the issue is... how Sad!  unfortunately the phone is not under warrenty.

Apple has to acknowledge that this is an IOS 7 issue and release a fix. If not they should recall the defective iphone 4s.

Very disappointed with Apple.

I have the EXACT same problem with my iPhone 4s 16GB! Im from The Netherlands (Europe) and I am really irritated because of this problem. Since the iOS 7 update, my WiFi stopped working every now and then, and it got worse everyday. Now it doesnt work at all anymore. I looked for a solution everywhere on the internet, but nothing works! Im really ****** of Apple, you better find a solution very soon. Thinking about getting android instead of iOS... Shame on you Apple.

Answer:Wifi greyed out on iphone 4s with ios 7

The warranty in Europe works as follows:

During the first year the manufacturer (Apple) is responsible for providing the warranty and giving the customer the required service.

However - and here comes the unfair part- the European Law describes that during the second year it is the store where you have bought your phone from - and not the manufacturer- (in this case Apple) that is responsible for providing you the warranty and support. This leaves Apple fully of the hook.

The store by law has to give the customer warranty while they themselves are not able to claim warranty from Apple in return. (Apple only gives one year of warranty)

With the low margins stores make on selling iPhones they suddenly are now also legally responsible for replacing or repairing Apple phones at their own cost.

The reply of consumer organizations is that it is up to the independent shops to negotiate on this with Apple. Yeah right. I wish every store the best of luck trying to negotiate with companies like Apple, or whatever other global brand. There is no interest in any negotiation with a shop that might sell only hundreds even only thousands of phones annually.

Thus the shop has no choice: if they dont sell Apple: their customers will go somewhere else..

And Apple smiles: They can state customers have two years of warranty, while during the second year it is the store that has to provide the warranty and pays the bill. Not Apple.

As one shop owner told me: I have to sell 50 iPhones to recover the costs of 1 defective iPhone....

The Law here in Europe should be rewritten in that it is not the store being responsible for two years warranty, but the manufacturer. That would would be more fair, would solve a lot of problems and could enhance the production of more reliable goods, since manufactureres will make sure their products will last longer.

I just read an article a few days ago: Apple Reports Q3 2013 Quarterly Results: $6.9 Billion Profit

I think this fully justifies that the law should be changed.

Enschede, Holland.

iPhone 4s 32gb bought online from the applestore, 1,5 years ago, for €799,- euros!!!!

Same problem started a few months ago when WiFi went off occassionally.

Just outside the warranty period.

À week ago i installed iOS 7 and i thought it worked because i had full time WiFi again.

Just now i lost my WiFi again and it even turned grey!!

Where is the balance in this story?

The phone became practically useless for me.

Apple help!

Ps in this case the manufacturer is the store, is there à 2nd year warranty for me?

Answer:Wifi greyed out on iphone 4s with ios 7

Let me sum up my observations in this discussion.

Everyone having a problem in this discussion has the following problem:

All phone affected are IPhone 4sAll problems occured after the upgrade to iOS7The issue we are experiencing is a greyed out WiFI button, which was not greyed out before. We have tried all options advised by Apple to resolve this issue.we are all unable to solve this problem ourselves constructively, although some of us have managed adhoc fixes like hairdryers or using the fridge to cool off the wifi chip. Our iPhone 4ss  were operating without any noticable problems prior to the upgrade to iOS7

The above makes me to draw the following conclusion:

There is a clear pattern and these are obviously not individual cases. It appears the wifi chip of the iPhone 4s is being of a substandard quality and not being not fully compatible with the new iOS firmware which causes this problem. Also most of the beta testing over the past months was done using the iPhone 5 and not the iPhone 4 or iPhone 4s. Mostlikely because the 4 series were not part of the large scale testing Apple was not fully aware of this accelerated issue with the Wifi chip (when you do a Google search on iPhone greyed out wifi you see that this issue is not new, and you see the issue involves mostly the 4s ) But it seems iOS 7 pushed these weak and thus unreliable wifi chips just over the edge, causing them to overheat and thus to stop functioning alltogether.

Apple must be fully aware of this issue by now but they are incredibly silent in communicating with their in my estimation  multiple thousands of customers worldwide experiencing this problem. Apple only sticks by claiming the upgrade to iOS7 is at your own risk (thats what I was told) and sticking to the warranty period

(I bought my iPhone in Aug 2012, so am out of Apple warranty)

I feel that Apple should take their responsibility and help her customers in solving this quality issue.

As customers in good faith we bought this product (I paid some €600) having trust in Apple and in the faith the quality would be such that we could use it -with good care of course- for at least 2, 3 or even 4 years.

But unknown to her trusting consumers Apple created a product using a faulty wifi chip (hence the overheating issues which can eventually lead to failure)

As result of this us, we, customers are now stuck with an unusuable iPhone for which we paid plenty of money.

( One thing I am sure of, if Apple would be a car manufacturer or an airplane manufacturer they would never get away with this, and would be forced to do a recall)

My message to Apple:

It is now time to act. Taking responsiblilty never hurts (even if you for some reason feel you are not fully to blame) It gives you credit. And credit gives you loyal customers.

Thank you.

Answer:Wifi greyed out on iphone 4s with ios 7

Rik, in the Netherlands: when you have purchased it directly from Apple, Apple is the supplier and therefor by law responsible for giving 2plus years of warranty. However this is only when you have purchased it as a consumer (als particulier) (B2C) When invoiced to a company you may only be given one year of warranty. (B2B)

When purchased somewhere else than directly from Apple, you also have 2 years of warranty, but in that case Apple gives only the first year of warranty, and  the second and subsequent years your reseller has to provide the warranty out of his own pocket. (he cant claim it with Apple)

Janusz here from Poland, trying to use 4S with iOS 7

Same issue. I fully support all initiatives to push Apple for taking the responsibility.

My iPhone is not doing his job anymore! Now Im in the US for about two weeks and expect to pay horrible bill to my network provider. All thanks to Apple not solving the issue with iPhone 4S greyed wifi story. But the worst thing, in my opinion, is that Apple got the feedback about 4S problems when users were changing from iOS 5 to iOS 6. Look like they did nothing about it.

Dear Apple,

iPhone 4S users, as myself, are struggling. Take the responsibility or lose customers.

You do not know the device was or was not defective ... the process of updating is in fact part of the update; therefore, making it the cause.  If you do not have additional experiences to share with the community, then maybe you should move on and find something productive to do?

Got the same exact problem, went to apple store they replaced me with the new 4s.....it cost me 139 pounds!!!!!!! very big amount of money for an international student like me and the very very saddest thing is.............the wifi only lasted for 5 DAYS since I got the new replacement. I use pay&go O2 as my provider, is that one of the reason as well? I lost my personal hotspot as well, on of the guy on apple store said that I need to sort it out with O2 in terms of the personal hotspot. Someone can give me an advice ?

Hello all, better give a try on heating the upper back part of ur 4s with a hair dryer for 60 seconds as it was mentioned here and you will see ur wifi back to life, power off ur phone and heat it near the rear camera for 60 seconds and no more problems ( at least to me and the one who posted no problem so far)

Answer:Wifi greyed out on iphone 4s with ios 7

Hello All,

Ive had the same problem (4S with no wifi, out of warranty) I tried using various methods including replacing the wifi antenna, nothing worked.

But I just tried using the hair dryer method, and it works! I was very much surprised to see it working again.

I hope this solution will be permanent, will keep you posted.

Dragondx2 and Oliveirinha, thanks for the posts!

Just my two cents..

I tried hairdryer method. Suprisingly it worked. Just takes 60 sec. under hot air. My iphone was bloody hot. I can not hold him for a while. But after I turn on my phone, wifi was back online and bluetooth as well. So far so good.

Answer:Wifi greyed out on iphone 4s with ios 7

First I tried 1) changing my phones name taking out the apostrophe, and it worked for 5 minutes, then 2) switching my network information HTTP PROXY from OFF to AUTO and it worked for 20 minutes... And I was reluctant to do the temperature tricks but desperate times need desperate measures so I gave in and 3) tried the hair dryer and I was also surprised - REALLY SURPRISED - that it worked.... Its been 5 hours and it still going.... (and couldnt help wondering who and why someone tried this!)

I was tried every I read in this post and others and nothing change. I Tried hard reset to factory settings and nothing. I am sure that the problem is with Ios 7.0.2, because the problem start at this moment.

Anybody knows if Apple will release a fix for this bug?

Answer:Wifi greyed out on iphone 4s with ios 7

Hi all

FYI i am a victim of this issue, i have try all the hot/cold and it works only few days. i even go to Apple shop, they said since i am out of warrently, i need to paid USD280 for replacement.

I ultermately go to a local shop to do a reflow and now everything is ok.

I heard that this issue is normal for iphone 4S, it happen since IOS 6.1.4

no one know the actual course, it just specaluate that it could be the soldering is not robus enough and when there is suddent hot/cold, it will make the soldering brittle and easy to break. If you all know/experience with ios 6.1.4. and ios7 on iphone 4S, you all should know that it get very hot easily even just doing FBing for 10 minute as compare to iphone 3 and iphone 5.

Basically what i am saiding is that i believe/think the cause is phone hardware itself, but the catalyst is IOS 7. If you all take note of ios 7, it switch between 3G and wifi very frequently (never have it so frequently on ios 6.1.4)

With this i would suggest to forget about the cold/hot treatement as it may not last long, try to paid a little(i paid USD64) for the reflow. i believe it will last more than one years, depend on the quality of the reflow.

And if you have an iphone that its warently about to expire, get it change with apps store, just said the wifi/bluetooth intermitten offline. At least i believe the referbish piece will last another oneyear or more.

I have said me piece. Hope it helps. So forget about apple, its of no use arging, they will never help you  and they will definately never going to admit that their Iphone 4S is of low quality and wil never recall like Toyota, unless iphone get exploded. I found this in the internet and somehow i agreed reflow is the solution.

Chalk someone else up to the skeptical but desperate category, so I tried the heat up the Iphone trick and it worked for me also.  Just adding more evidence to the conversation

Answer:Wifi greyed out on iphone 4s with ios 7

In my opinion it definitely is a hardware error of a substandard quality wifi chip in the iPhone 4S.

The installation of the new iOS 7 just pushed it over the edge, destroying our $700 iPhones.

When you do a search on the internet youll find plenty of people having had the same issue with the installation of iOS 6. However, at the time of the introduction of iOS 6, all iPhone 4S users still qualified for Apple warranty, since all phones were still less than a year old. With as result that at the time people affected went to Apple, got their replacement, felt appreciated, and everyone was happy.

However now with the introduction of iOS7, the story is very different: practically all iPhone 4S users -unaware of their iPhone having a substandard quality Wifi chip- suddenly experiencing this problem after installing iOS 7 find they are in serious and costly trouble:

- the warranty has expired

- Apple has been aware of this issue since the itroduction of iOS6 (fact: just do a google search on iPhone 4S wifi greyed out)

- apple does not take their responsibility

- and even now -being aware of this issue- Apple is not doing any damage control and taking their responsibility by warning other 4S users NOT to upgrade to iOS7, since that would mean having to admit there is something wrong with the 4s, which costs money and might mean reputational damage.

Well Apple executives; I can assure you not doing anything at all damages your image much more !!

I find this behaviour appalling; Apple really needs to address this issue ASAP and make the iOS7 firmware unavailable for the iPhone 4S. Not doing so and being fully aware by now of this present issue makes Apple imho fully responsible for all new cases of iPhone 4S users -unaware of this issue- installing the iOS 7 firmware from now on.

APPLE: PLEASE TAKE YOUR RESPONSIBILITY AND COMMUNICATE TO ALL iPHONE 4S USERS NOT TO INSTALL iOS 7  !!

The WIFI chip of the iPhone 4S is simply not trustworthy !!

Since after i update my iphone 4S (32GB) to IOS 7 this wifi problem came up!!! its really really frustrating since iphone 4S is expensive here. Please apple do something about it! if this is not a hardware problem please release another update to fix the wifi!

I have been having the same issues with my brand new 4s. its only a month old cause i had a replacement from the apple store in september.. After the ios7 update my wifi was greyed out..

I tried everything, spoke to an apple Genius online. reset the phone, reset the network settings. I was going crazy.

Yesterday my phone ran out of batterys. it was dead for about 2 hours then i charged fully and the wifi is working fine and has been for about 24 hours.. I hope it stays that way..

Stilling having problems with lag, crashing and battery life but im hoping they can be fixed with an update..

Try letting your phone battery run down compleatly, worked for me!!!!

I wonder if a reflow actually works... Is there a online reflow service?

Answer:Wifi greyed out on iphone 4s with ios 7

I had this same issue and found the answer online very quickly.

1. Put the iPhone in Airplane Mode

2. Reboot your Wi-Fi router

3. Turn off the Airplane Mode

All of your other Wi-Fi spots that your phone has already connected to will be remembered, and will connect automatically when within range.

Answer:Wifi greyed out on iphone 4s with ios 7

Thats actually kind of the point. The product they sold was defective and an update with their software pushed it over the edge. There was no way for me to know as a consumer that it was defective and from what I have read if I didnt update the software the phone would still be fine. There was no warning that there would be any possibility of a hardware failure if I updated, if there was I wouldnt have updated. No worries though. An Android phone is on the way to use and the iPhone can sit in the drawer for testing purposes only. Makes me really glad I never bought the Mac system.

and me too!  Big apple fan, but this is testing my patience.  IOS7 worked fine for a few weeks and then I noticed the WIFI kept dropping the signal.  after toggling the wifi on and off over a few days, its now stuck in permanent grey and will not work.  I now have a dumb phone - great!

Answer:Wifi greyed out on iphone 4s with ios 7

I tried the hair dryer suggestion and it worked until the phone cooled

if I reset the nework settings I get the greyed out wifi button

if i then put it in the fridge I get the green button back but it then indefinately looks for networks and cant find them

theres something wierd gong on with all the strange suggestions for fixes; someone technical person must have a good idea whats gone on with the 4s phones and the update ?

Hey just like to add my two cents

Got this problem today after my daughter was using the phone

She was playing one of those high graphics game

When I took it back it was really hot which was normal

Then about an hour after I tried using the phone and no wifi

I tried the hair dryer method and it works (only the hair dryer)

This method is used in electronics all the time which means its a hardware problem

And its the heat causing it in the first place because we werent using wifi

When it happened

Hope this helps future users

Answer:Wifi greyed out on iphone 4s with ios 7

I also had slow wifi for some time now but this fix seems to have sort out that problem also

Answer:Wifi greyed out on iphone 4s with ios 7

vinpat - Im in the same boat, went to O2 they said its software, Apple say its hardware and youre out of warranty!

theres been a few people on saying its basically a conflict or compatibility problem between the new OS and 4s phones that they werent aware of!

have a look at iOS 7 wifi greyout problem

so in my simple logic its a hardware problem brought on by the software update

for me thats Apples responsibility as they caused it by the update?

Answer:Wifi greyed out on iphone 4s with ios 7

Under EU wide consumer protection laws all items are covered for by 2 years warranty. It even states this on the Apple website http://www.apple.com/uk/legal/statutory-warranty/ .

However, here it states you must get redress from where you purchased the phone if over 1 year old (in your case O2). Ive been passed from my service provider (Vodafone) and back to Apple numerous times with no-one willing to take responsibility!

Its a good wheeze these companies have going! Blame each other and the consumer is stuck in the middle!

Answer:Wifi greyed out on iphone 4s with ios 7

its the old hardware/software get out clause!

Ive looked at the warranty link you attached; Im not a legal expert but I think maybe the 2 year minimum and 6 years stated for the UK relate to the period in which you can make a claim; I dont hink its a warranty period as such, you jus have 6 years in which you can bring a claim and go legal, which they know isnt worth doing!

since it would appear now that the ios7 update has caused a hardware issue, can the hardware issue be repaired; Ive read a post saying that someone fixed it for little money but had to do a bit of surgery?

surely someone can fix? OR is the phone done in and downgraded to a bog standard phone?

I wonder how many users of 4s phones are actually affected

Answer:Wifi greyed out on iphone 4s with ios 7

Hi what it looks like two me and yes my iPhone 4S wifi went gray after the ios7 update I did the hairdryer trick yes it did work but not for long so I heat the wifi chip up with a soldering ion until I felt it move not my wifi not gone of stall it looks two me when u up date your phone it takes that long the wifi chip is getting hot so move it the same happen when sum did the ios6 update iPhone got really hot inside if left on for a wile and thats what ios7 did

Answer:Wifi greyed out on iphone 4s with ios 7

Ok Someone needs to take responsibility for this fiasco! This is clearly not just the odd case of phone failure there are a lot of us with the same issue. So can I make a suggestion? What if we all cancell the payments to our phone service prodiver - Vodaphone, O2, Orange etc in the Uk and refuse to pay until its sorted? Sure the product is not fit for purpose under UK law, why pay for a contact with data if we cant use it?

Edited By Host

Answer:Wifi greyed out on iphone 4s with ios 7

I agree with you, but I need my phone for business and not sure whether all us frustrated 4s users will make a big difference to the service providers!

I cant believe that this hasnt hit the media though?

Ive been on to O2 anyway; they say its a software issue; I said no its definately hardware, its a defect in the phone; he said, yes, caused by the software update, so its a software issue!!

So I called Apple; they say youre out of warranty; I said yes I know but your software update caused the fault; he says, sorry but we cant do anything apar from booking an appointment at the Apple store and pay £150 service charge and they will repair it, or replace it.

now, I dont want to do that and then find theres a £30 common easy fix, then Apple will have had me for another £120 which will be very hard to swallow!!

I have tried Apple support chat, it foze, no response.

I tried Apple support call back, it wont accept my valid phone number.

I tried one suggestion of resetting network settings, no good.

I tried reinstall of ios 7 as suggested, no good.

I would also like see Apple, solve this issue and proved support ASAP so I can use my iphone again which is now baically just an expensive paper weight.

Answer:Wifi greyed out on iphone 4s with ios 7

I have same problem with my iPhone 4S with iOS7

I tried Apple solution, reset network settings and restore iPhone in iTunes with no luck.  The only think that worked for me was: 1)Turn off iPhone, 2)Put it for 15 minutes in fridge (not freezer), 3)Turn on and inmediately do a reset network settings.  The solution only lasts half hour and the wifi goes dead again.  I have done the trick twice and it wored both times.

Since the wifi works after doing the trick maybe it is not a hardware problem because it starts to work perfectly.Or if it is a hardware problem it has to do with heat sensor misreading the temparute of the iPhone which never gets hot to a point it cannot be hold.

The problem started right after i upgraded to the latest version of iOS7 so theres a strong possibility is buggy software.

Answer:Wifi greyed out on iphone 4s with ios 7

Just bought a second hand iphone 4, and this has the greyed out wifi. After reading all the posts in this discussion I believe this problem to be a hardware issue. The heating and cooling to get the wifi to work, is a classic trait of the tantalum capacitors used to stabilise the rails in the various circuits. So many years as a Broadcast engineer 50% of all problems was related to these especially due to their make up and physical size. Dry joint would be cured by heating, and breaking down at temp would require cooling. The main problem was to get the size small they would use lower rated, ie 6.3volt on a five volt+ rail ( hence breaking down ). Total insufficient, needed to be at least double but this would greatly increase the size.

Not related or maybe, just repaired three Kindles with various probs, half screen, rebooting, and frozen screen.

A couple required a quick touch with the soldering iron on the various tant capacitors and the other just removed ( battery voltage is stable enough ) it and hey presto. You can normally tell the capacitors as they are the largest of the surface mount discrete components.

Hope this helps, havent opened the iphone yet, but will see what I can find.

Ther is nothing like trying to fix an Apple product on your own...

Anyone knows how does a faulty iPhone 4S wifi chip look like when it is compared to a well working one e.g. taken from iPhone 4S that is still running with iOS 5 ?

Im going to assume that the Apple stores in America are far less friendly than here in Australia..

I recently bought a second hand iphone 4s, only to find the wifi greyed out. I was so mad, and after trying the basic troubleshooting (resetting etc., even fridge + heat method) i took it to a phone repairer. They replaced the wifi antenna which still didnt help.

Then I decided to call Apple. They asked for my serial number, and after confirming the phone was under 2 years old (it was even out of warrenty) they said to go into the store and it would be replaced, free of charge.

Im so happy with Apple Australias customer service, so if youre in Australia and think youll have to pay for a new phone like it seems you unfortunately have to in America, think again!

I am from pittsburgh Pennsylvania

The same thing has happened to my phone. We have three iPhones in my household. It has not happened to the iPhone 5, only to my 4s. This phone is only 14 months old and like new, but it is out of warranty and Apple wants $200 to replace it. I went to the Apple store and they said it was a hardware problem and nothing could be done. The store was packed with people with the same problem. The employees did not even bother looking at anyones phone, they simply stated it was a hardware problem and if in warranty were replacing the phones and if out, were stating it would be $200 for a new phone. It is disgusting to me that Apple treats its customers like this when it was obviously a product defect that reared its ugly head once the customers uploaded the IOS7. I am disgusted. If this defect is not recognized by Apple, as my familys 3 IPhones need replaced I will absolutely not buy apple products.

Ironically, I was just looking at buying a MAC since we need a new computer at my house , but after this experience I think Ill go with an HP or Dell product.

ok i went to the apple store today because my wifi and bluetooth are greyed out on my 4S , i cant turn it on .....only to be told i would have to pay $199 for an iphone 4s because my warranty expired. all the tech did is a diagnostic check which did nothing,, i dont qualify for an upgrade tip next year in october through Verizon .so i am stuck with a none wifi phone or pay $199 when i can buy a 5S if i qualified.. all this became my problem because i upgraded software? Not cool apple!!!!!!

Hi, just to add:

I remember that when I turned on Do Not Disturb (from sidebar) It was the last time my WiFi was working. After that (2 hours aprox. with Do Not Disturb) when I tried to turn off my iPhone freeze and did not response. I forced to do a hard reset (home bottom and off bottom).

After this momment the WiFi have the same issue that all of you. All this happened at 2 days after installing iOS 7

Does anyone remember if it happened the same?

Hi im convinced its a software problem.  I tried your trick, wifi started to work, and the phone inexplicably restarted itself and after that no more luck with wifi.  Back to square one.

Answer:Wifi greyed out on iphone 4s with ios 7

The only way to confirm this is a software problem is to roll back the ios (prior to ios 7 or even prior to ios 6).

You cant do this officially....although, Im guessing there are ways to do this somewhere on the internet.

After a quick reading on the internet, apparently when you upgrade to iOS7 you cannot go back to iOS6

Answer:Wifi greyed out on iphone 4s with ios 7

hi everybody,

i have to point out, that in the past days I only see people, write and write again the same issue, or post against apple support service, but NOBODY see the earlier pages of this topic.

in very firsts days after iOS 7 upgrade, me and other people did several tries to fix the problem, and if you go to read the pages u will find some solution too.

apple, as in is terms of services, suggest you to change the phone with a refurbished one for about 199 $, so is nothing special or different from other cases of assistance. if u wanna fix by yourself, is up to you, but it can be unsafe.

the wifi greyed out becasue the upgrade is a very stressful process for the wifi chip, that goes overheating.

so the iphone to avoid to broke itself, stops the services and need and hardware process to unlock.

in the topic you will found all the info you need.

PS: in the topic u will find also the instruction to go back to ios 6 but it is does not solve the issue, cause is indpending by the software. u can go back until the signature of your phone with old ios is still valid (usually a couple of days).

so, my pray is : please read before post.

thanks and regards.

Answer:Wifi greyed out on iphone 4s with ios 7

Hi, i do not understand why i have to pay 200 dollars for a refurbished phone when mine was working ok until the upgrade.  What garantee i have for the refurbished phone when my original phone is malfunctioning because of the new iOS.  Both having the same hardware.

If the iOS7 stresses the wifi chip why they permit you to install it on a phone that does not support this new operating system .  This is ridiculous.

Answer:Wifi greyed out on iphone 4s with ios 7

dragondx2 - forgive me as Im not a technical person, but Ive read the earlier posts and still dont see what the proposed fix is?

also, Im still confused as to whether its hardware or software?

and the suggested fix as far as I can see is the hairdryer?

Ive had the hairdryer on my phone and my phone stating that its too hot and needs to cool down; but still no wifi or bluetooth!

as a user its pretty plain and simple to me; before ios7 my phone was perfect always wifi and bluetooth, reasonable battery etc. etc. THEN came ios7 update and now my phone wont work, despite hours reading possible fixes, and learning that 100s more have the same problem, as you say everyone asking the same question

but no official statement from Apple!!! WHY

Why? Because your warranty expired.

Guarantee?  90-day warranty on the remanufactured device, which has all new parts, except for the camera & processor, which are hand-inspected by an Apple repair technician.  It is actually better than a new iPhone, because it is hand-inspected, not mass-produced.

Your original iPhone had a hardware defect which you did not report to Apple during the warranty period.  This is why you are required to pay an Out-Of-Warranty Fee.

I hope these replies answer your questions.

Hi Jowshuf,

So you got the free replacement with a broken wifi iphone 4s which is out of warranty?

Answer:Wifi greyed out on iphone 4s with ios 7

I totally agree with you, ftarr. I am sick of hearing Apple customer service staff saying it is solely a hardware problem. There are tons of devices broken reported here and it is obvious that it is their software causing hardware break down. It is time for Apple to educate their staff and starts taking responsibility for this problem no matter the device is out of warranty or not. Otherwise, I would rather Apple stops OS upgrade for iphone 4S.

Im tired of Apple constantly taking down my links to petitions and videos on this matter, it would help a lot if they would just address the issue and fix peoples devices and stop being cheap. They will end up losing more money in the long haul.

Answer:Wifi greyed out on iphone 4s with ios 7

Yes I think you should do that. If there is no problem with iOS 7 as APPLE claimed, why did they give you a 4S replacement with iOS 6 on it   I would suggest Apple to do the same. They should upgrade all their current stocked iphone4S to iOS 7 and see how many devices will fry the wifi chip after the upgrade. (If they dare to).

Wi-Fi not working on i phone 4s? Ok, how to get a positive result!

I had wi-fi greyed out and not working after downloading iOS 7. Today I got a FREE replacement phone after meeting with an in store Apple Genius.

I am in the UK, I dont have an Apple care plan and the phone is just out of its 12 months warrenty.

Heres how I did it:

Called my mobile service provider (Vodaphone), made a fuss about the product not being fit for purpose, was informed they are aware of problems. They put me through (free of charge) to the Apple care line. With Apple I inisited I speak with someone who knew about the problems with the up date to iOS 7 and wi-fi. I told them about all the posts on this forum and other theories about overheating the wi-fi chip etc, basically let them know I understood the problem. Next I told them I expect Apple to resolve this problem for free as its created by their own software up-grade, know your consumer rights.I am allocated my own technical expert at Apple who speaks with me on the phone, stays in touch and sends emails and arranges the Genius Bar appointment at my local Apple store for free.I attend the appointment and after explaingin the problems I am given a FREE replacement phone.

So my advice is to be persistent, insist you get a satisfactory result, I can only praise Apple on this for sorting things out for me. I use my phone for business and personal use, so it effected me hugely not being able to connect to to wi-fi.

Apple are aware of these problems and apparently are willing to resolve things, despite my phone being out of warenty and me having no Apple Care plan in place. Be persistent people, and good luck!

Answer:Wifi greyed out on iphone 4s with ios 7

Hello! As per my ancient post in here - had exactly the same problems. Apple has exchanged my phone once, I did the update again and same thing happened. So I got another replacement (note I had two new iPhones 4s within a week replaced!). This time I havent converted to iOS 7 and wifi is running absolutely fine. When I asked them about it, they blamed it on hardware issue - of course - the point is that it is caused by overheating during their nifty software update.

So the only solution for users of iPhone 4S is to not go for any further updates. Which is really stupid. If any more of iPhone 4S phones are being manufactured with the same wifi chip, or will Apple change them for some better ones? As I can only imagine we will get away with not updating our phones for certain amount of time only, until some bug will appear and we will be forced to update them.

I was lucky enough that my phone had 40days left on warranty, but that will be gone then and will I or other people do? I feel really let down by this, and to be honest Apple should be replacing our phones with iPhones 5 as they dont seem to suffer with this issue.

Whos mad or rude?  Im glad you got lucky with a free out of warranty replacement.  Thats the exception that proves the rule.  99.9% of Apple customers will NOT get a free OOW replacement.  It never hurts to ask, but if the answer is no, then people shouldnt complain that they are being cheated.

It is what it is.  The fix is to pay the OOW fee, or upgrade your phone with your carrier, or buy a new device.

Dont kill the messenger, ladies & gentlemen.  Im not happy about the situation.  But Im a realist, and a huge proponent of personal responsibility.

Answer:Wifi greyed out on iphone 4s with ios 7

hi Boardhedz,

as I said, the safe and secure thing to do is to go to apple or your phone store, and give the phone in assistance. the bad thing is that if the phone is out of warranty, you have to pay even if the cause was the system update (and i think this is not fair too).

said that, if u wanna take the risk to repair the phone by yourself, u have to consider that any procedure can be hurtful for the phone, and for you.

before any hairdry or freezing procedure, you have to understand if your case can be applied.

1) in the phone settings, you still see the wifi mac address? because if not, this is not the case (this means the wifi chip is totally burned out)

2) do you download the iphone configuration utility?

3)do you see the phone logs?

4) in the log the wifi function is menthioned? and in that case what is the error log? (its similar to previous post log?)

5) anyway THINK before any hardware intervent you  wanna do!

anyway, some people report in the topic that apple said the ios7 upgrade can go wrong if the wifi chip is not in good condition before the update, and this is the matter why they dont change it in assistance.

Just some friendly advice, If you get a replacement iphone, DO NOT UPGRADE to IOS 7.  I am now on my 3rd Iphone 4S.

The first one lasted a very short time and Apple replaced it, this had nothing to do with IOS7.

The replacement phone worked fine until the night I updated to IOS7.  WIFI went out and I went into the store for a fix.  They got my wifi working again but it was a temporary fix for about 2 days.

I went back to the Apple store and they replaced my replacement.  They even offered to update my new replacement phone to IOS7.  What an idiot I am, I said sure.  A few days with my replacement-replacement phone and now wifi is out again.  Nothing I do can fix it.

I now have to go back to the store to have my replacement-replacement replaced.  This will be my 4th iphone, I guess I am unlucky.  The people in the store were very nice but it was very hard to not get snippy with them when they repeated the same line to me for the 10th time, a software update will not cause hardware problems.  At what point does a company acknowledge their problem?

DO NOT GET THE IOS7 UPDATE IF YOU GET A REPLACEMENT IPHONE 4S.

Not speculation at all.  Its based upon the observed facts.

Wi-Fi was working prior to iOS 7.

iOS 7 does not cause hardware defects.  If it did, then ALL iPhone 4S devices with iOS 7 running would have wi-fi greyed out.

This is a documented issue, for a long time, prior to iOS 7.

The defect is made apparent when excessive heat is applied to the wi-fi chip.

An iOS update process generates heat.

The defective wi-fi chip stopped working after being exposed to more heat than it could handle.

Good chip does not fail under normal upgrade heat generation.

Bad chip does fail under normal upgrade heat generation.

Its called deductive reasoning & logic.

If the steps in TS1559 do not resolve the issue, then the wi-fi chip is defective.

And by the way, if the chip was not defective, then the warranty would NEVER apply.  The terms & conditions of the iOS upgrade make it very, very clear that the update is not mandatory, and Apple bears no responisbility for anything caused by the upgrade.

So, if you want to argue that the chip is NOT defective, and that it is NOT the hardware that has caused the issue, then youre undermining anyones attempt to get the device serviced as a hardware problem.  Apple will not service it for a software issue.

I have the same problem. 2 days ago i received a new iphone 4s. Payed for it because out of waranty.

I even asked the apple support, what will happen if i upgrade to ios 7.02? Then she told me: if it happens again that the wifi and bluetooth do not work, just call and we replace the phone again. So i will call them because i did the update and wifi and bluetooth are down again. The funny thing is that all off my co workers did the update to and nobody as a problem. Maybe only temporary.

Just adding my name to the list of those who are experiencing this same issue...  I did NOT have an issue with WiFi connectivity with any previous versions of iOS (prior to iOS 7), such as the original poster mentioned.  After updating to iOS 7 (the latest version I was able to update to was iOS 7.0.3), I encountered this exact same issue where I was unable to toggle the WiFi from OFF to ON, even though it appeared to be possible to turn the WiFi on in the Control Center (Turning WiFi ON in the Control Center, however, does not actually turn on the WiFi antenna or connect the phone to the WiFi network, as many have noted).  This all came about for no apparent reason this last Saturday (10-26-2013), when I noticed that my iPhone 4s was not connected to my WiFi network at home.  Like many who have posted here, I have looked around online, and found that many, MANY people are having this same issue. The tact that Apple has taken in denying that theres an issue is perhaps expected, since that has been Apples MO for years. But what is really hard to stomach is that it seems like Apple is laying the blame for this issue at the feet of their customers for having a phone that is out of warranty.  This issue is different in one very big way in that this WiFi issue has effectively rendered many peoples phones useless.  In many cases, the iPhones that are affected cannot be updated, or one cannot revert to a previous version of iOS because, for one reason, to do so requires a WiFi signal to turn off Find My iPhone.  I went to the Apple Store yesterday and talked to a Genius, who essentially said that since my iPhone is out of warranty, the options I have are to either pay $200 to fix the phone, buy a refurbished phone, or upgrade to an iPhone 5s or 5c. How can any company sell a high-end product, such as the iPhone is purported to be, and not stand by it if it later is found to have defective components when a software release exposes an issue with said products?  Apple (i.e. Apple Care) has the gall to say, well, too bad your phone is old and out of warranty... because even if this is the fault of defective hardware and/or software, were going to make you pay to fix it.

Apple may be legally in the right, but that doesnt mean that theyre doing the right thing from a business standpoint. My experience in this whole matter has turned me away from being a loyal Apple patron, and I have been a loyal patron of the brand for years.  I have owned Apple products long before there was even a niche for an iPhone.  I am typically patient when it comes to issues such as this, but this issue is much different from a minor software glitch.  Without access to WiFi the iPhone is more limited in its functionality and I am pretty much forced into spending money to fix a problem that is Apples doing to bring myself back to where I was before this issue occurred.  I am definitely going to put the word of mouth out about my personal experience in this case. As it currently stands, I am very disappointed with Apple.  To see that there are so many others who have had or are having an experience similar to mine, that there are so many people who have been forced nilly-willy to shell out $$$ to fix a problem that they shouldnt rightly be held accountable for, says a lot about how the way things are likely to go for Apple and its customers in the years to come.

Answer:Wifi greyed out on iphone 4s with ios 7

apple has always charged for phone support and there will always be glitches and software problems with any smartphone, but apple just broke records on sales when the 5s and 5c came out so i highly doubt ur dislike of apple and their policies are gonna mean jack.

Your analogy is flawed.  The cause of the defect being brought to light is the heat generated by the update, not the software itself.  It is a side effect of the update, not the update itself.

A closer analogy would be if your auto manufacturer offered a free, non-required, paint protection process that involved exposing the vehicles exterior to an equivalent amount of heat as a very hot summer day.  During that process, the connectors that hold on the fenders disintegrate.

Now, that defect was already there.  And that defect would have revealed itself if the vehicle had been exposed to a very hot summer day.

Now, if your defective out-of-warranty iPhone had been exposed to a hot summer day, and then the Wi-Fi failed, would you demand Apple replace it?

I personally think Apple should offer some form of compensation, but I dont think its required by them.  Asking nicely versus demanding will probably work better.

Push someone into a corner and demand they do something, its not unreasonable to expect that they will dig in their heels and follow the letter of the law.  Ask nicely, and you might get somewhere.  Anyone claiming that Apple is legally required to do anything is fooling themselves.

Caveat emptor.

if your wifi is greyed out and you are still under warranty the best option for you is to simpy get a repair or replacemet. Very rarily do the troubleshooting steps work to correct this. If you are out of warranty then you should weigh your options as far as paying the oow fee or getting a new device

You still need to do the steps, because Apple will require they are done, even on an in-warranty device, to confirm it is a hardware issue.

Another option to the Apple forums may be to voice your concerns at GetSatisfaction.com

This is the link to a posted question:  https://getsatisfaction.com/apple/topics/wifi_greyed_out_on_iphone_4s_with_ios_7 ?rfm=1

Answer:Wifi greyed out on iphone 4s with ios 7

There is also a Problem report on GetSatisfaction.com:  https://getsatisfaction.com/apple/topics/wifi_greyed_out_on_iphone_4s_with_ios_7 -87up8?rfm=1

Maybe if Apple hears some public requests for information, they will at least respond to the issue.

Answer:Wifi greyed out on iphone 4s with ios 7

I never post to forums, but I feel as though it is warranted.

I, too, am having problems with my iPhone 4s after updating to ios 7. My wifi is greyed out, and my Bluetooth no longer works (spinning). I did my own troubleshoot. Further research revealed that this seems to be a massive problem for 4s users after they updated. Still naively optimistic, I worked with a couple polite Apple support folks to troubleshoot, to no avail. I refuse to put my phone in the freezer, refigerator, or put a blow dryer to it.

I was told by a very polite Apple support person that my phone is no longer under warranty, and that I would have to pay $199 for a replacement.

This is a story weve all read several times on this thread and/or other forums.

If this was a relatively isolated incident, I would gladly accept that my phone is out of warranty, that hardware is not perfect and sometimes fails, and I would pay for my replacement (or wait for my upgrade in 6 months).

This, however, is not an isolated incident. The connection between the ios 7 upgrade and massive wifi/Bluetooth failure is undeniable. I am not here to make claims about deliberate sabotage or planned obsolescence, as I do not believe Apple sought to fry tons of phones with an OS update. Who would? Thats crazy. I am, however, here to add to the voices of dissatisfied customers that no longer have access to the most important feature of their phone, with no recourse but to pay for a replacement.

I will not pay $199 for a replacement. To me, it is not an accpetable alternative. I appreciate the help I got from Apple support personnel, but I will especially appreciate when Apple chooses to at least respond to this apparent problem in a meaningful way.

Thank you.

Same thing happen to me. After upgrade to IOS 7, my wifi is greyed out. and the bluetooth has no switch(spinning). When I put the phone to refrigerator for a while, the wifi can works well for around 10 minutes. Then It just suddenly lost the wifi connection, and never find the wifi network again. It just keep search network(spinning).

Hurry up, Apple.

so fed up!!! i have 9 apple products. now thinking i may go android, as apple have been no help whatsoever! They are at fault here and will not claim responsibility because of the cost to them! after spending thousands over the years and being a faithful apple user i feel totally let down! we have now had 2 bad experiences with them, and neither time did they help at all. we just have to buy new upgraded models!

APPLE YOU ARE LETTING ALL YOURE CUTOMERS DOWN, LOSING THEM WILL DECREASE SALES IN THE LONG RUN!!!!

Answer:Wifi greyed out on iphone 4s with ios 7

Apple think they are irreproachable but so did Microsoft and IBM before, you reap what you sow!!! People dont forget.

Answer:Wifi greyed out on iphone 4s with ios 7

One hundred percent agree with your point of view. Apple must assume it responsability of this issue and solve problem at any cost.

Answer:Wifi greyed out on iphone 4s with ios 7

I think that repairs have to do with the use of a product and not its design or construction.

Answer:Wifi greyed out on iphone 4s with ios 7

The top three reasons I bought an Apple!

QualityInnovation Support and Service

I must add I am very frustrated for a couple of days for not being able to use my WiFi; not to mention the bill I am going to get from my SP!

I upgraded my phone two days ago to keep it up-2-date no other reason! I was happily using my phone before! After searching for some support I see this problem has been going on for at least a couple of months; so why didn’t apple disable the upgrade for 4S or at least give us some warning message! I could have avoided this problem two days ago! This just destroyed my top three reasons in one upgrade!

I hate to think the above top three went away with Steve Job! RIP

Answer:Wifi greyed out on iphone 4s with ios 7

Hey guys, first post here, so i had the greyed wifi for about a week now, tried everything you guys said: reset network settings, reset all settings, set up as a new iphone, hard reset, restore via itunes, everything and nothing worked.

So frustated i gived up, but yesterday i did a rutinary battery calibration on my 4s, i used my phone like theres no tomorrow to drain the battery (played some 3d games for like 2 hours) after that i was at 2%, let the phone turn off itself, waited 4 hours then i connected to the power source, then i went to bed and didnt touch my phone until the morning, for my surprise when i wake up my wifi was ON!! At first it didnt recognize my network so i turned off, waited 5 min and turned on, my network showed up! Now im using only my wifi connection and its working.

Dont know if it will work with you guys just thought i should share this.

Answer:Wifi greyed out on iphone 4s with ios 7

Hey guys, unfortunately the only solution (so far) is to change the device. Today will be my second replacement of the product!

Answer:Wifi greyed out on iphone 4s with ios 7

Made no difference at all sorry to say I am fed up now I have tried everything I think a new phone is the only answer sadly. I have 4 x 4ss but when they are out of contract not sure I will replace them with iphone 5s. It seems to be widely accepted by everybody but Apple that this is a software glich that has caused the hardware to fail. This would be ok if it was possible to go back to previous versions of software but you cant.

Answer:Wifi greyed out on iphone 4s with ios 7

HI, can you please tell us that what was the iOS version on your first replacement phone and why you had to get a second replacement? Moreover please let us know the iOS version of your second replacement when you get it.

Answer:Wifi greyed out on iphone 4s with ios 7

The iOS version was 7.0.3 on first replacement. I will let you know about the iOS version in my second device when I get it.

Answer:Wifi greyed out on iphone 4s with ios 7

I just have to say that I am now on my 3rd replacement phone. This week alone Ive been to the apple store 4 times. Luckily Im still under my 2 year apple care, but every phone has within a day, has had the wifi quit working. When they run diagnostics in the store after spending an hour wiping it at home they say theres nothing else I can do to fix it. This being my 3rd phone Im at my wits end. I saved to buy this phone for a year, got excited it had came to my provider & now Im considering just getting a new phone outside of apple all together.

I didnt have any issues until last week & since nothing has improved and obviously replacing it doesnt matter either. They really new to figure this crap out or they will definitely be loosing a ton of customers including me.

Answer:Wifi greyed out on iphone 4s with ios 7

I deleted both find my iPhone and find my friends, reset network settings and its fixed! Thanks for that. I use IOS 6.1.4.

This solution makes sense because several apps including these two were added back to the phone after a recent iTunes sync which is when the greyed out problem started.

Answer:Wifi greyed out on iphone 4s with ios 7

Ok guys, I already I have my new iPhone...iOS 7.0.3 again...I hope it works. I will keep you posted.

Answer:Wifi greyed out on iphone 4s with ios 7

WOW - this worked for me - well its now been over 3 hours and my wifi still seems fine.

After trying all the usual restore the phone procedures, and wasting loads of time on chat to apple support where the only conclusion was to persue apple through the law courts with the EU consumer laws (has anyone been successful with that cos I have a faulty 2008 Macbook Pro) I now have a wifi back after following the most simple steps from tgon711 to kick it back into life.

I had a newly restored iphone 4S (restored as a new phone after deleting all backups) and still wifi was greyed out.

Turned on both airplane mode and do not disturb

shut down the phone

went out to get some beers (essential ingredient)

and after about an hour, I turned the phone back on and wifi is back.

Incredible that apple have not yet sorted this bug which is affecting so many

I also cant believe that I still love these apple products, Ive had quite a torid relationship over the last few years

iMac G5 died after 2 years - repaired under apple care

iMac 27in 2011 had to have screen replaced after about 18 months

Macbook pro 2008 screen has gone faulty but after apple care expired

Sons iphone 4 home button faulty

Daughters iphone 4S sleep/wake button faulty

and now my 4S wifi issues after ios 7 update

Talk about losing faith

Hey, apple tv still works ok

Answer:Wifi greyed out on iphone 4s with ios 7

I just got the wifi on my iPhone 4s working on iOS 7.0.3. These are the steps i took:

1 Connect your phone to iTunes via USB.

2 Uncheck the Wifi Sync option.

3 Sync the phone via USB.

4 Check the Wifi Sync option.

5 Sync the phone via USB.

See if that works.

Answer:Wifi greyed out on iphone 4s with ios 7

Thanks eolivar20I will try that later.

How I wish it can turn back my wifi connection because this issue is killing.

What am I doing right now is to use my 3G. Our wifi connection at home is so useless to me.

Answer:Wifi greyed out on iphone 4s with ios 7

I had NO PROBLEM with IOS 6.1.4.

all problems started AFTER upgrading to the lastest 7 (suggested by Apple)

If they knew about this problem they should have stopped custome to update their 4s

Answer:Wifi greyed out on iphone 4s with ios 7

I have the same problem......as many others I have downloaded iOS7 and the problems started! I wish I have never done that.

Answer:Wifi greyed out on iphone 4s with ios 7

I am very frustrated....no wifi ....no bluetooth..... and so many people with the same issue.... and no help from apple!

Answer:Wifi greyed out on iphone 4s with ios 7

I would suggest everyone to STOP buying apple products. Very dissappointed with apple!!!!!

Answer:Wifi greyed out on iphone 4s with ios 7

Okay so I recently posted that I was having the same issue & luckily thanks to Apple Care coverage until Feb I went through 2 replacements. With replacement #2 I didnt have patience to wait with turning on do not disturb and Airplane mode so I thought it was unsuccessful. I was also frustrated that my phone wasnt restoring & I thought I had lost my last iCloud back up... lets just say I was 5 seconds from throwing my phone at the wall.

Well with my 3rd replacement my wifi didnt go out until 2 days later in the middle of my restore. So that night after frustration and REFUSING for the 5th time in 4 days to wipe & restore I tried the method again..IT WORKED! I didnt think it would. Heres the thing though you have to let it sit in off mode & dont turn it right back on. SO heres what I did.

I turned on Airplane mode & Do not disturb then turned the phone off. I waited 30 minutes to be sure. It absolutely worked and so far no issues at all!!!!!!

What I understand is there is an issue with the iOS7 update & the network settings. It is registering that the network is unavailable within the software. As a result it is thinking it doesnt have wifi capabilities & isnt turning back on.

I have now successfully been running wifi for 3 days with no issue. If something happens that it quits working I will be sure to let you know & you better bet if it does in February I will be going elsewhere.

Answer:Wifi greyed out on iphone 4s with ios 7

Guys - there is no fix to this problem. Just got out of an Apple store genius bar appointment. iOS 7 kills the wifi/blutooth chip. hardware failure. If youre out of warranty or dont have apple care or cant upgrade your phone you are out of luck. They know its a 4S problem only. You upgrade to iOS7 at own risk. Pretty big failure for apple.... IMHO

Answer:Wifi greyed out on iphone 4s with ios 7

Bought my iphone 4s one and half year ago ......so of course I am out of warranty .....just can not believe I was so stupid to download ios7 ..... but I thought I could trust their suggestion to do it.....now my phone is ****** .... 628 euro after 1 1/2 years.....bustards....

Answer:Wifi greyed out on iphone 4s with ios 7

I also had the same issue. Tried most of the suggested solutions. Finished up taking my 4S a part and lucky me I had a hot air soldering iron. So I did heat up the soldering of the WIFI chip and also the chip itself cooled it down for a while and reassembled it. Working fine so far. Keep fingers crossed.

Answer:Wifi greyed out on iphone 4s with ios 7

So my wifes 4S has not had its wifi working for about a month. She updated it to IOS7 last night in an attempt to see if it solved the issue...it didnt.

So she decided to put it in a bowl of rice overnight. This had been a good fix on her old Iphone 3 when it got water in it.

I told her it wouldnt work but she did it anyway. Turned off the phone and popped it in an airtight container of rice. Got it out this morning and it works!

I have no idea whether this is due to the phone drying out or just being turned off to cool down over night but its working fine so far. Ill post again if the problem returns.

Answer:Wifi greyed out on iphone 4s with ios 7

I put mine in a bowl of corn flakes but it didnt solve the problem

Well, having spent a week reading every nit of advice on every forum, trying them all and getting nowhere, I was getting desperate.   I live in West Wales in the UK, and the journey to the nearest Apple Store is eiter 2 hrs by train or a similar by road.

My local Apple Reseller in nearest town could not help with iPhone issues and my phone services provider EE (Orange) could only suggest new phone. Free upgrade in 6mnths due but available now for £140 or so. Also outside of years warranty.

In desperationn showed it to guy with stall in the local market pavilion who does computer repairs and also handles Mac stuff.   He said straight away that it was a hardware problem and replacing the wifi chip would sort it. he could do it in a v short time!   Slightly apprehensively - but what the **** Id tried everything else- I left the phone with him and told him to go ahead.   few hours later I called to check and he said Yes, fixed.

And hes right. new wi-fi chip by anyone who can do it and thats the solution. Cost? £35.00

Hes on www.computabilda.co.uk    Tel is (44) 01267 233651 and his address is Unit 14 New Market Hall, Carmarthen.

As a mega Mac family- Large desktop, Macbook Pro, 2 iPhones 2 iPads I think the Customer Service when Mac SURELY knew this was a hardware problem has been sub-optimal to say the least!   Will this post stay on this forum I wonder

Youre welcome to have non-Apple authorized work done on your device. Just realize that such work immediately and irrevocably voids your warranty, and Apple is no longer responsible in any way, shape or form for your device.

If it solves your issue, then great.

Answer:Wifi greyed out on iphone 4s with ios 7

@TJBUSMC1973 Of course it says that in the terms of conidtions. It has to. But this is different. They push out these updates, pop ups tell you to install it, you are reminded to do it when you sync with iTunes, etc, etc. When you buy an iPhone, you get access to future updates. This is like bringing your car in for regular service, the oil is changed, and then when you get the car, you cant go into reverse ever and the dealer says sorry, cant fix it, you need to buy a new car.

If it is something that has to be done at your risk (and liability) then apple should not be pushing it upon you through the alerts, etc. That is a push process. It should be a pull process, the user should have to go find it and conciously choose it and there should be a pretty huge notice stating the risk.

That is not what apple did. I have full faith in apple that this was not intentional (that is that iOS7 would kill the wifi chip) but rather the side-effect or collateral damage of bad or no testing (it doesnt happen right away so could be missed).

Nonetheless, it kills a pretty big part of the functionality.

I have contacted the major newspaper tech columnists, Reuters news, bloggers and will contact the state of california consumer protection agency. this is pretty evil for apple. And let me add - I am a 2 iPad, 2 iPhone, 2 iPod Touch household, completely loyal to apple. Still pretty evil. Too large a financial impact for apple to cave. they have to be shamed.

Surely the issue is that Apple didnt offer this solution  either centrally or via these forums  to their myriad customers worldwide.!    The triffling worry of a warranty ( out of date anyway!) being voided pales into insignificance.  Poor show chaps!

My original post describing (unauthorised!) replacment of wi fi chip solving the problem quite simply, and the associated replies has been removed from this forum! As no doubt this message will be. Why?

Hate to tell you, but its not that big of a deal.  So few customers are actually affected by this defect that it is not that big of an issue, on the large scale.  Apple is replacing defective devices that are within warranty, and offering a discounted replacement (with a 90 day warranty) on devices that have an expired warranty.

Warranty still valid = Free Replacement.

Warranty expired = Discounted Replacement.

Very simple.

Answer:Wifi greyed out on iphone 4s with ios 7

Okay, but a simple posting saying its a wifi chip replacement to solve problem and/or  if in warranty your device will be replaced at the nearest Apple Store  its what any trader worth their salt and with a whiff of concern for their customer base should have done!
